What a suggestion. just reinstall the operating system. do you honestly expect someone to completely re install just to remove directx 9. do a search on google for directx uninstaller

Yes, I do. While researching this answer I did, in fact, do exactly as you describe ... search google for tools to assist. Those that exist, as of this writing, appear to be notoriously incomplete and/or buggy - often causing more problems than they resolve. I can't recommend them.

This will fix the problem. XP ships with DirectX 8.1 as ppart of the OS. DirectX 9 has a habit of not installing correctly if you have Anti-Virus Runnig, or if you are doing the install with the online installer on a dial up connection.

To remove DirectX Do the following:
Start > Run > regedit
Browse to and remove the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX

Don't delete any of the other folders or your PC wont work.

Restart your computer and if you did above, DirectX 9 will be gone, and XP will have reinstalled 8.1 in the background on restart.

Confirm by doing the following:

Start > Run > dxdiag

This will open your directx diagnostic tool, containing a wealth of info. On the first tab, down the bottom it will tell your your directx version. Should now say DirectX 8.1

The deleting registry thing works, but XP doesn't seemed to have reinstalled it by itself

Then XP is corrupt, something else that was installed corrupted your graphics system or disagreed with directx 9. At this point I would recommend you have a look at what you installed over the last 6 months. Consider using system restore to do this, and note what games etc you installed. Run a system restore back about 6 months and see if you are having the same problems.
If you're not, start reinstalling from here, Install directx first from the Microsoft site though. Now continue installing your programs and see which one causes the problem.
Note, if you're worried about restroing back six months, then create a restore point first, this will mean you can restore back to this point if you like later on.

Guys, I HAVE TO get rid of this stupid Direct X 9.0. My question is, though, the following. Isn't XP nowadays shipped with the version 9.0???? I believe that's the case. I'm so pissed.

Hello.
I'm now having the same problem. just installed dx9.0c and it gets stuck with my favourite game.
the bigger problem is that the dx-uninstaller on the web don't work, and dxbuster is not up 2 date.

help please.
