Read the article that everyone's commenting on. Even if you don't actually have mobile Internet service, your cell phone provider might allow you to IM others anyway. For Verizon, at least, I downloaded a mobile IM program from them that actually communicates with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! servers by sending and receiving commands, information, and messages via SMS. I guess "gateway" or some such would be the right word for that? I'm certain other providers have similar functions. Of course, the caveat there is that since everything is being sent via SMS, if you don't pay an unlimited flat fee for text messages the individual charges from numerous messages and possibly even signing in and out can rack up. AIM actually confuses things a little further, in that you can use their service to bother anyone with a cell phone number and the ability to receive SMS text messages. By sending a message to a plus sign followed by the country code and full ten digit phone number ("+1 234 567 8900", but without spaces), it will attempt to send an SMS text message to that number. The recipient may be even capable of responding. Another gateway type thing?
