Hi Leo...

Nice site... and let me put this to you to continue this thread about CRC:

I've just got a new laptop from Dell... it has XP Prof SP2, up to now I've been using XP Home SP1 (deliberately did not "up"grade to SP2).
Many files which are on DVD which I need to copy over are being rejected by the new machine's drive... back at the old machine they are accepted fine... but when I run CDcheck on the old machine errors are indeed flagged. Is there sthg about XP Prof (SP2) which would account for this... and more importantly, is there not some way of tweaking XP Prof SP2 so that it is less puritanical?

Otherwise presumably I'll have to reformat, install XP Home SP1 on the new machine and struggle to stop Micro$oft inflicting its hateful "up"grades on me and causing me even more Micro$oft-related stre$$... than normal?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Leo
I read the articles above about CRC on CD drives but my problem goes beyond. I recently upgraded my hard drive and motherboard. I installed a game and after going through a few of its menus it freezes and windows gives a CRC error. Also the same error persists with other functions. I tried to download a large file, it took 9 hours to download. After the file download finished and it was ready to be copied on the hard drive a CRC error appeared. Could the problem be related to my hard drive becuase I had none of these problems before upgrading.

PS How do I read the replies you give to commenters

You might mention that you can also get a CRC error on SD cards... and various other media.... not only CDs/DVDs.

I get CRC error when I try to read the dvd disc that I just burned. But the problem is when I try to burn the compilation again I get the CRC error again on the particular files that I was getting before. Is there a problem with the hard disk?

If you suspect the CRC is because your cd is scratched use JFileRecovery to copy. NOT FOR EXEs but if its music or video you're trying to recover (assuming the cd is not broken in 8 places) its a miracle worker.

Hi Leo,

I've done everything you've said but I still get a CRC error after i've burnt a DVD/CD. Is there something wrong with my DVD Drive?

I recently got a Cyclic Redundancy Check error but can't delete the offending files. How can that be done?
Thank you.

i have similar problem, i was having problems with my laptop, took it to local bestbuy for fix, i purchase backup discs of my hard drive so i wouldn't lose any info.. well the laptop was fix and is working perfect. but now when i try to copy or reload my backed up files for discs(which are "DVD+R DL double layer 8.5 GB RW") i get the the "Data Error-cyclic redundancy check". when i first load the DVD discs my disc drive immediately begins to click & whirred after a couple on minutes of this files & folders appear, but as soon as a click any folder the whirring begins again and the folder eventually opens. once i get to a file i want to open/copy it whirrs again then i get error. the disc aren't scratch & i have clean any way, even tried running disc thru "cd check" software program it wasnt able to read them. The best buy personell said my dvd/cd rom drive was reading them to slow, and that was cause for error and i just needed a faster drive to get files. i have a toshiba DVD-rom SD-R2312, it it operates perfectly while watching dvd's or burning cd's.. please help
