Helping people with computers... one answer at a time.

Unless you have two computers running simultaneously you cannot run two different versions of MSN Messenger at the same time.

Can I run two versions of MSN messenger at the same time?

In a nutshell: no.

MSN Messenger is designed to replace it's previous version when installed. The only real solution I'm aware of if you absolutely require it would be to have two computers, each with a different version.

Yes you CAN! This is what I did....

I had to run version 4.6 (for work) and the new one. I renamed the directory where 4.6 was stored. Then I installed the new version. After it was installed I renamed the folder back to what it was and Voila!!!

Good Luck!

Yes you can. Just get an old version and a new one and it will work on one computer... I've had 3 running at the same time at one point

How do you rename a directory?

Leo

the same way you rename a file. In Windows Explorer you can right click on it and select rename.

Depends on what you're attempting to run. If it's MSN Messenger, then no ... i'll log you out from the first computer when you log in to the second.

go to http://www.asdfuae.tk/ it has a 3rd party program that enables you to run 2 versions of messenger at once. the only problem at the moment is that his site is down due to too high of a data transfer for his account type, but if you wait it should come online/he will upgrade his account. i have no previous experience with the program, i am just going by reviews posted on mess.be. speaking of which if you go to http://www.mess.be/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=category&id=14 there are more programs that add the ability to install 2 versions of msn at once

Go to http://www.mess.be and download a patch called Mess Patch (alternatives: Jnrzloader or Polygamy) for YOUR specific MSN Messenger version (verify in Help > About).

I have two versions of MSN running on my computer, irritatingly!

I had Messenger 4.7 on my computer and upgraded to MSN Messenger 7.0....the upload didn't replace the old version and now the old one runs in the background....letting everyone on my list know I'm online even when I don't want them to know!

I'd like to delete it but don't know how!

When I log onto MSN 7.0 it tells me that I can't because I'm logged on at an alternative location. So I manually have to override it but signing on again.

If anyone can help me I'd be grateful.....

MSN Messeger and Windows Messenger are two different programs. If the version is 6.x or 7.x, that's MSN messenger. If it's 4.7 or 5, then it's probably Windows Messenger. The About box on each should tell you.

This article has instructions for removing either: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_uninstall_windows_messenger.html

Hi, I was searching on google. I wanted to know if its possible to sign in my msn on my pc, then go on another pc and sign in on that one too (in the same account) without it signing me out on my pc?
What I mean is, can I run the same msn account on 2 pc's, is there any program for this?

Most greatful for any replys, thanks

No. MSN only allows you to be logged into Messenger from one location at a time.

September 21, 2005 4:34 AM

Yes you can. Run one via the msn icon. Run the second (usually an older version) via internet explorer. You'll see it in the icon bar of explorer.

Actually I think you are wrong. I don't know if it is my computer, but I have the old msn and the new 7.1 or whatever it's called. I can log into one with one email and the other with the other email. Maybe I'm just special though :).

I am running two versions of MSN messenger and do not know how I have accompplished it. Whenever i turn on my computer, the older version automatically signs me in and while I do not get a main window for it, others see that I am online. This older version is not showing up in my list of programs within my computer- how do I get rid of it?

Yes you can if you use a substitute version of the program i.e windows messenger or zango messenger.

You CAN have two versions of msn. The msn which comes coupled with windows XP is not automatically deleted when you install a new version. Therefor you can have 2 versions installed which will both load with different accounts

This is true and if you have deleated the version of messenger that comes with Windows XP you can re-download it from the Windows Update Website.

leo your wrong, i dont know much about computer but clearly you dont understand the workings of msn... i always run 2 msn's for 2 different accounts (uni friends and home friends)... i can chat to myself from each, make the pop-ups different colour and everything. Well, without getting into details why you can't run 2 times the MSN instant messaging software... YOU DON'T HAVE TO.... and yet, YES you can have a double MSN presence.... with 2 different MSN identities/passwords (I guess this is what you want to do) one for friends/family/work1 and the other for work/work2
Use the MSN are normal with passport1 and user your passport 2 en the MSN web version... or download Trillian (which is what I do)

You can run TWO msn messengers. First way. You can install msn messenger 7 and also use the msn messenger provided with xp. granted this version that came with xp does not have half the functionality and features of 7. but if you just need to chat. you can.

other way is install version 7 first and search the internet for an older version. (per perhaps version 6.0) try using and installing some olderversion that will allow you to use msn.

theoretically they should not detect 7 if its an older version and install.

Third way is how LEO described. using many different third party messengers.

I believe that Messenger Plus! Live
http://www.msgpluslive.net
would help, you use it with Windows Live Messenger and it has a feature to use two WLM/MSN or more simultaneous logins (Unsupported by microsoft)
If you choose sponsorship (support) it has adware, but you have the option to install without this (refuse to support).

Try it it may help, also it allows to check the email count for non hotmail ones.

Chris
December 28, 2006 5:51 AM

I have solution which helps but still leaves you with limited features. Use msn messenger and use web messenger. then you can be on two accounts at the same time on the same computer.

Go into messenger plus settings (the message plus icon near top of messenger contacts list)

Select "Preferences" to get the messenger plus live preferences window, it comes up on the "General" tab,

Select the "Messenger" tab and check the "Multiple accounts" option...

More info to follow.

Messenger Plus! Live Forums Messenger Plus! Live Extension MsgPlus! Help & Support multiple account
http://www.msghelp.net/showthread.php?tid=66698&pid=734475#pid734475

States that with the above option selected you just run another copy of messenger, and "sign in" first time with other account, after which it should be listed as an account to sign in AS...

(It is possible to adjust the registry to run multiple versions of messenger on startup but for the inexperienced just re double click the messenger icon - NOT the taskbar one)

Another App.
March 23, 2007 5:40 AM

There is substitute app's for MSN that can handle several log in's at the same time - 1 of them is Mercury (was dMSN) www.mercury.to

I've run it now for a while. Great!

One thing you can do to run 2 msn at once, or more if you really want, is to download a program called A-Patch. there are several versions here:

http://www.msgshit.com/downloads/cat/MSN%20Patches

And it's pretty self explanitory. A freind of mine said that he had 3 running at once, which i guess is possible... but kind of useless i guess?

Actually, you can run two versions of MSN simulataneously. There is the original (or at least, extremely old) version of MSN which is on the computer unless you delete it manually. You can run this and any other newer version that you may have at the same time. You cannot, however, be logged in as the same account on both MSNs, you will be logged out of one if you log into it on another computer/msn.

March 17, 2008 11:13 AM

YES YOU CAN!
Get Messenger Plus Live! Add On
http://msgpluslive.net/
With that installed go into it's preferences and select "Polygamy".

Account Polygamy
Just check a box in the preferences of Messenger Plus! Live and you'll be up and ready for signing-ing into more than one Messenger account at the same time. No need to patch any file or use other Messenger clients anymore!

Hopefully LEO will amend his reply with this info!
