Which messenger are you using? And what version? And is it identical to the folks at the other end who can't hear you? (And even though it sounds kind of obvious, can they hear *anything*? :-).

If you have them both running, can you log in with one ID to one account, and another to the other?
I know that you can have lots of Windows open, but you have to have the same user in them all.
I think that in Yahoo you can have two instances running, with a different ID in each

All my friends seem to be using AIM. Can I IM with them on Windows Messenger or do I need AIM? Do the various IM programs talk to each other? I'm particularly interested in IM with friends on Macs.

Nope, they do not inter-operate, sorry. Windows Messenger will not talk to AIM. You'll need to install the appropriate IM software. For example, I happen to run MSN Messenger, AIM and Yahoo - three separate instant messengers. The Mac issue doesn't matter - AIM on Mac can talk to AIM on Windows just fine. (The only exception, is that MSN Instant Messenger will talk to Windows Instant Messenger).

There are third-party IM clients out there that support multiple protocols, but their status is legally questionable. The IM protocols are not "open", so technically you're only supposed to use the clients from the IM vendors such as AOL, MSN, Yahoo and so on.
