I've got Windows XP Home (SP-1) and Windows Messenger 4.7; the Messenger appears in the icon tray every time the email program swithes into its third "identity" (or alias), disappears when I leave that identity or close the Outlook Express. Closing it doesn't help; it doesn't appear in add/delete programs; a registry hack I found, doesn't work. Puzzling, eh?

Just got rid of the loading of Messenger, by simply finding the "Messenger" file (My Computer, C: drive, Programs, Messenger), and renaming the whole file "MessengerZ". I suppose it's being "called" by the email program, but of course it won't run now.

Start -> Run (as admin)

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

To get rid of windows messenger, find the file in c: programs and rename it. you may have to go into task manager and end its process first. Just push cntr alt delete at the same time, and look down the list in the box that comes up for msmsgs.exe, click on it and then click on the end process button. then hou cna rename the file and it will dissappear. AIM may appear in your icon tray but that is easily taken care of.

I have Windows messenger 4.7 and struggle big-time with deleting it...
Whenever I try to delete it it gives me a message saying that some other program is using it and it can't be deleted unless I shut down that program. I can't find those programs to be running, and it does not help the least to close them if they are running. The same foes if I try to rename the filepath...
Help me!

I might try rebooting in safe mode and seeing if you could uninstall then.

Its not running, but if Outlook is set to run messenger in the background, it might pose a problem.

In outlook.. Tools/Options
Select the OTHER tab
uncheck the option for Person Names Smart Tag.

Hope that helps

I run Windows XP with out the service packs. I had Windows Messenger and this is how i got rid of it......MYCOMPUTER...C;DRIVE>>>PROGRAMS...right
click on the Windows Messenger icon AND chose properties to make sure it was an application i first deleted the application because if you try to delete the file first the computer will tell you that other programs are using Windows Messenger. I wiped the App. from trash and then deleted the folder and wiped it from the trash also all done!!!try it it might work for you!!
