Leo you need to check your references again.
There is no place under control panel, add or remove programs, can you delete it.
This link from Microsoft explains it in detail how to remove it.
The comment using the task manager strategy worked for me and it was fast and easy
Posted by: Randy at March 9, 2006 9:53 PMForget Microsoft. To remove it, do the following:
Click on Start>>My Computer or Control Panel>>Add or remove programs>>Then select Add/Remove Windows Components on the left hand side. Now uncheck Windows Messenger at the very bottom and select next.
Right, now to remove it. Click Start>>Run. Cut and paste the following command: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
IE and OE should also load a little faster.

Posted by: Leo Notenboom at September 6, 2006 10:45 PMTo remove or uninstall the windows messenger, download the Remove Windows Messenger tool from http://www.diskdatarecovery.net/remove-windows-messenger
Posted by: Alex Stuart at November 9, 2006 8:34 AMThat tool is *unnecessary*. Please read the article above or visit this article: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_uninstall_windows_messenger.html
You don't need to download anything to remove messenger.
Posted by: Leo Notenboom at November 9, 2006 9:39 AMI run Windows XP with out the service packs. I had Windows Messenger and this is how i got rid of it......MYCOMPUTER...C;DRIVE>>>PROGRAMS...right
click on the Windows Messenger icon AND chose properties to make sure it was an application i first deleted the application because if you try to delete the file first the computer will tell you that other programs are using Windows Messenger. I wiped the App. from trash and then deleted the folder and wiped it from the trash also all done!!!try it it might work for you!!
