i need to move my Outlook express folders to Outlook on another machine
I've read your article on how to move folders from OE to another OE machine.
then i read your article about Outlook express and Outlook being completely different animals ....
Can i still follow the procedures as for OE to OE or not??
Thanks
Posted by: Lewis at February 11, 2005 8:41 PMIf you get an error message: No messages can be found in this [Identities or Identities\{.....}]folder, then continue browsing so as to include all of the sub folders, i.e.,
Identities\{.....}\microsoft\outlook express. I happened to be using the OE6 Identity option rather than the OE6 Store option when this worked.
I just moved a number of messages from an old computer running Windows 95 and OE-5 into a new machine with XP and OE-6, using the instructions at the top of the page. Had the exact same results Bob mentioned Feb 18; kept getting an error message after clicking on each sub-folder, but I just kept going into the next sub-folder and it finally completed the task.
Posted by: Charles at February 27, 2005 1:06 AMDear Sirs,
I have moved my important emails onto a CD in various email folders, via an HP CD r/rw drive (F drive). The problem is when I try to import the files into my Outlook Express 6 program, I go through all the wizard's motions only, at the end, to get an error screen saying: 'file is already in use' or no files can be found. I have even tried copying one file, via Explorer, from my F drive directly into the Outlook Express store directory on C drive, but the file fails to read in the files/directory column in the program.
I am using a PC with Windows 98.
Can you help me with this, I would be very grateful.

The files copied from the CD are almost certainly read-only, which OE doesn't like. Locate the files in windows explorer, then on each, right click, select properties, and make sure "read-only" is NOT checked.

There is file called folders.dbx in the original store location. This must be included along with all your other .dbx files. Once this is included the mail imported OK. What everyone else says about procedures seems correct
Posted by: Mike at March 14, 2005 3:04 PMI have bought a new computer and backed all mail up on a cd off my old computer as dbx. files by following the export instructions saved them to the desktop of new computer and followed out your instructions but at the end the message came up (No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has required files open, please close that application). I do not have an other application open and cannot get my mail to appear, please help as I have so much mail that I would hate to loose........

the file in use is folders.dbx, the 'real' one actually in use by outlook when you open it. You can't modify it 'cos you have outlook open :)
If you find where this folder is kept, go there and delete the folders.dbx file (all with outlook closed) and then copy your dbx files that you wish to import.
This will recreate a new folders.dbx file based on all the .dbx files that it finds in the same directory, including the files that you've just copied here :)
