Mike: it certainly sounds like you need to locate drivers and possibly install them manually. That's what I would expect for a USB to DB9 device. Check the belkin site, or any software that came with the device.

Hello!
I have a 1-GB Tiny Disk USB 2.0 flash drive and a 60-GB Hitachi Travelstar portable hard disk, both working fine in my laptop (WinXP Home SP2). I plugged them to another PC (WinXP Pro), which showed the message "Found new device", then "There was an error installing the device" and it did not recognise either and reported "Device unknown" in the Device Manager.
The problem is that after that incident I get the same message when I plug any of these 2 devices to my own laptop as well, either directly to a USB 2.0 port, or through a self-powered USB hub. No matter what I tried (uninstalling - reinstalling, plugging in different USB ports, system restore...), both devices do not respond and I constantly get the message "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it". Need to mention that the printer, which is connected to the USB hub, is working properly.
I would most certainly appreciate any kind of suggestion and help.
Best regards
Spytsi

I transferred files from my old computer to my new one using a usb memory stick (storage device). I think I made the mistake of not "safely" removing it from my computer...now every time I start up, I get that little tray icon saying something about safely removing hardware, even tho there is no hardware to remove. Is there a way I can stop this from popping up every time I restart? (I don't get online much, so a personal reply would be great, if possible!)

P.S. I tried inserting the usb device again, and "safely" removing it, but every time I restart, I get the little tray icon about safely removing hardware. I just want to get that little icon to stop. LOL

Posted by: bukky at June 2, 2006 11:12 PMEvery time I try to install a new Maxtor IDE disk, I go through this, but I can't remember what I did.
This time, it's n a USB box. Though the Device Manager says "This device is working properly," My Computer doesn't see it. I have installed with the CD and without; I have uninstalled it; I have plugged it in and unplugged it, both with "permission" and without, and I have tried to roll back the driver (though there is no old driver). As I say, the Device Manager sees the disk, and says it's working properly. Other disk drives (drives that already have info on them) work in the USB tray that I'm using. It's just that I can't use the new disk drive. Yes, it is jumpered correctly, too. The correct lights light, and the disk spins. This is the same problem I always have when I get a new disk. AAaakk!
