I plug in my new flash drive and nothing happens.
I have a 1-year old computer with XP. The flash drive is a Kaser 4GB. Model Yo!Fun060. What can I do?
Hi,
Im getting a problem when i try to plug a 4 port usb hub into my laptop. It gives me the device not recognized' by windows. I know it works coz i have used it on another laptop.
I decided i would then plug it thro a targus 4 port and link it thro that and then it works. But when plugged directly in, it doesnt know what it is.
Can you help?
I have a yo!Fun-060 1.5GB and it just stopped working with XP. Help! The information on the drive is critical!

Posted by: Jeff P at December 6, 2006 7:44 PMYour comment {"Installation instructions usually boil down to: "plug it in".} is not always correct and almost inaccurate!
Let me explain: Certain hardware, require that the USB unit be not plugged-in or powered up, untill the drivers are manually installed via provided software (CD/DVD).
The simple and more accurate answer should have been "RTFM".
Certain USB hardware require that the installation software for the USB device be installed FIRST; prior to the connection/power up of the USB device.
Your method (as with other devices than just USB) will get drivers installed by WinOS but these MicroSoft provided drivers are usually a subset of the driver complement included with the device. Some vendors provide additional features that MicroSoft drivers will not (and cannot) include. Thus, the unknowing user will not be able to get the full benefit of the device as intended by the manufacturer.
Additionally, there used to be another problem with simply "Plug it in" advice and this may still be correct today.
Once any USB device drivers are installed in a system, they are very difficult to uninstall, as all USB devices that have been plugged in (even if only once) are registered in the Window Registry permanently and are not normally removed with the idea that the user may plug them in again at a later date.
You can consider most USB drivers that are installed in a system as being "sticky" and uninstalling them will require some hard Regisry editing.
Please retract your original suggestion!
Posted by: Randy O. at December 8, 2006 7:03 PMFor the past while some of my usb ports haven't been working..... I can use my mouse and my printer, but if I use anything else, like an mp3 player or a digital camera they won't work, they appear in the taskbar and I can Safely Remove Hardware, and it acknowledges what the thing is (ipod, my camera type, etc) but if I click My Computer nothing shows up.
So I downloaded a usb analyzer, and it's basically being interrupted by something. Virus? Help please, thanks.

Posted by: Rick at December 28, 2006 7:31 PMI have a dell latitude, probably with a usb 1.1 port and a external hub. Santa gave me a freecom usb flash stick, plug and play for usb 2.0 or 1.1. No software needed, none added. Windows however does ask for software, can't find it and the stick won't work. My harddisk is full so help needed....!
Thanks
Marlies
Try this one Leo, I have windows me and cannot install the USB flash drive. Is it impossible or what?

Very often, devices that are more complex than a memory stick or mouse require an interface to be installed, such as iTunes for the iPod. They also may require additional drivers. Check the manual for how to install them :)
