Why don't running programs show in my taskbar?

For those who get an error when running the progra, I had the same thing happen to me. I looked elsewhere and this worked in the end:

"Here is a way to do it:
1. Save registry file (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restoretaskbar.reg)
2. Double click on the saved file. It will ask you if you want to enter this information to the registry. DO NOT CLICK OK YET. Leave it there.
3. Kill explorer.exe. To do it open the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and on the processes tab, click on explorer.exe and then click the button "end process"
4. Now that the desktop icons and the taskbar disappears, click the ok button for the registry
5. From the task manager, click menu file->new task, and enter "explorer.exe" and ok."

I had the problem where tasks would disappear from the taskbar, but still appear in the Alt-TAB list. The tweak doesn't work for me, and all it does is reset my taskbar + quicklaunch settings, so I have to go through and reconfigure them again. User beware!

thanks so much, i just come back from hk this morning, when i back to my room, i turn on the computer, and i realised that those running programmes do not show on the task bar; i was so worry about that, but now all solved...thanks sooooo much!!!!!!

you are the best. I searched "running programs on taskbar has gone away" on google, your solution was the 1st output from the search and it did work. :-)

Finally I got my taskbar working properly

wow this took all of 30 seconds and solved a big frickin problem.
