Do I have to know which service provider the recipient of my text message has before sending from my computer?

I believe so, yes, otherwise you wouldn't know where to send it.

"What is the deal with these multiple text message to thousands of recepients"

The reason they want to know how to send multiple text messages to thousands of recepients is for spam texts. So you thought Spam Mail was enough did ya?

Regarding SMS, you said, "In all cases, remember that this is email based". Does that mean it is just as unsafe to send things like cred.card #s via texting as it is via email?

No idea about phone to phone, but the article is about using email to send SMS, and email is email, and thus email is in the clear.

f i txt someone's verizon phone from the internet does it use their data plan or does it count as a txt message to txt me back?

Depends entirely on their plan, but for the most part where the message comes from or goes to means little. If they pay per SMS message, then it's an SMS message.
