This system doesnt work anymore. Firstly the tick to store forwarded messages has been scrapped off Windows live. Besides, you can only forward to another hotmail live account (msn, hotmail etc..) :(

I still see it, and my mail is still being forwarded - to a NON-Hotmail address.

Perhaps it's not available on all the Windows Live Hotmail servers yet.

I will say that the forwarding - particularly to a GMail account which I tried
yesterday, was painfully slow.

They are only allowing Forwarding to "custom domains" (already registered w/ Live) -- otherwise, the forwarding address MUST be @msn.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com

That's simply not true for everyone.

My hotmail mail is forwarded to an email alias on a completely random domain
not registered with or associated with Windows Live. And it works just fine.

I don't know what the rules are yet, but it most definitely works as expected
and described for many people.

@Leo: Do you use one of the Hotmail paid packages? My experience is the same as that of Michael and HobbesPDX.

Nope, I've got the same free version of MSN Hotmail (err... Windows Live
Hotmail) that most people do.

I don't yet see a pattern as to why it works for me and some others, and not
for everyone. But then, Hotmail's been very inconsistant at times when rolling
out new features.

The answer to your question is simple.
If you are using a free acount, then it will only forward to those three accountsd listed.
If you're a paid customer then it will forward to any account.
Quite an incentive what?

NOT true. My Hotmail account is a free one, and I'm forwarding to an arbitrary
email address.

Maybe this will help some - it appears that most gmail accounts that have a dot in them can receive mail without the dot. For instance, an email might be first.last@gmail.com and it will send and receive as firstlast@gmail.com just as well.

I haven't had any success with this either. Has anyone else tried it from the other end? Gmail has a "forward from" feature which is suppose to include hotmail. I can't get it to work. I even tried changing the populated server to pop3.live.com and changing the port to 995 (because that's MSN's directions for Outlook) and various combinations but nothing worked. Has anyone had any success from that angle?
