please try and follow these EASY steps!
1:open your Windows Live Messenger(msn)
2:at the top on your toolbar please click on TOOLS
3:click on OPTIONS
4:on the left hand side you will see Messages,CLICK
5:at the bottom you will see two boxes to be checked for messge history, check both boxes.

Hi There Leo, you have saved me from many a slapping my own forehead moment in the past so thanks for that!
Anyhow, my question regarding messenger hitory.... have always had the save history tickbox checked since day one, but when I try to recall it I find there are coversations that don't appear. For example, speaking to my girlfriend who's the other side of the world at the moment virtually everyday, yet when I recall our history there are gaps of several days between recorded chats, and some of the once recorded haven't saved the complete chat.
Any ideas? Could really do with getting that history back cos she's given me some inportant dates for my diary that i didn't write down at the time and she will get mighty cross if I ask her again!

My computer upgraded Windows Messenger last night. Now I no longer have my custom emoticons and most important, my message histories have all disappeared. I have checked under the tools menu and there is no option to even refer to message history. They have also changed the program to where you have to save each conversation each time. Have I understood this correctly? Where would my old conversations be stored (I did have the save conversations selected previously)

When I try to open my old msn conversation (.xml format) in Internet Explorere I get the following message:

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

Sorry to disagree but By default MSN Messenger V7.5 logs Chat.If you look in My Documents > My Chat Logs.
May have to enable Show hidden files in Explorer

Found my wifes work IM history and was disturbed to find that she was a little too cozy/cutesy with one of her male work colleagues. Initially she turned off the history but turned it back on to show that she was not hiding anything.

QUESTION: If the conversation history is ON is it possible to pick/choose which conversations to delete? In other words would it be possible for her to delete particular conversations between her and her male work colleague that she doesn't want me to see...and leave the conversations that she doesn't mind me seeing?

I was having an important conversation in msn messenger when suddenly the electricity stopped for a few minutes and then i lost the conversation window. I have ticked the box to save MSN conversations. Last night, I seemed to lose connection and my conversation doesn't seem to be in the usual place. In fact it says the last conversation I had with this particular individual was on 21 Oct 07. Assuming I am able to recover the conversation, can you please tell me how I do this (using Windows Vista).

Ok everybody out there looking for convo historys. If you saved then deleted them you can get them back. many of the simple undelete programs will do it. you have 60000000kb in a 60gig Hdd small for todays terms. and the average convo is for arguments sake 500kb. Unless that particular 500kb was writen over you can get it back easily. As far as forensic teams from data years ago. The department of us defence uses 24 passes using secure wiping programs. That is wiping and re writing 24 times and there are still people out there who can get the data back. So its in there somewhere. if you diddnt save the history there may be a temp file of it but it will be stored on a small segment of the harddrive (sorry dont know where) and will be wiped over multiple times in a short time. not detectable by your average free recovery software

I know we've asked so many times but I'm so confused...

If a conversation that was never saved doesn't hit the disk does that mean the expensive forensic recovery thing can not retrieve it?

Also, if there is the chance that the conversations that were never saved did hit the hard drive disk but the conversation occured years ago is it possible for the expensive forensic recovery thing to still retrieve it or would it be over written by now

Dear Leo, Is there any other way you can record(save) msn conversations, in order to monitor your kids, what they are doing? Kids are smart, they know how to turn off history option. I am looking for something out side the msn settings, so they can't disable it. Does any one know any third party software to monitor massenger?

Recently I deleted my msn chat files by mistake and I do need it back urgent
to some legal issues
I got them back but can't open them in any program
All it say is File broken and cannot be open When I open it in publisher it all comes up with a lot of dribble that does not make sence

thanks for the useful advice on storing MSN Messenger conversations. however, whilst I can open them once using the approach above, once I have read them in IE, the file extension changes to .xML and then I cannot open them again in IE. Is there a way round this?

So thats how to retrieve past conversations with MSN Messenger, how about with Windows Messenger? When I go to the "options" tab, there is no "messages" tab. Does it even save them? I need to get an address that someone sent me thru that and i closed it. THANKS!

Dear Leo,
If you have deleted and blocked someone on msn, does their message history get automatically deleted from your message history folder? I know my version (Windows Live Messenger) does not delete the message history but do other verisions?

Dear leo. a phew days ago i had a conversation that i thought was saved to my hard drive. my intant messaging options were correct and the next day i was able to re read it. this was a very important conversation and now i cant find it anywhere. is there a way it could have been accadently deleted from the folder but still remain on my hard drive? please respond......

I have saved conversations from older versions of Messenger that I would like to be able to open, but they are not formatted so that the current version of messenger can open them. Is there any way to open these with a separate application or convert them to another format? There is no file extension appended to the end of the file names.

When i try to open my MSN email I get the error message: Windows cannot open this file. To open this file windows needs to know what program created it. Same thing with my email address book. I can access my Hotmail accounts. I have no idea which program to "choose", and when I let the computer choose, I have no luck. Thank you!

I just upgraded from the old msn messenger to windows live messenger. I always had the option to save conversations. However, I just realized that I could not find the message history that was saved before. Please don't tell me that they are gone with the upgrade because that would just be horrific...

Hi, i'm looking for a conversation i had few days ago on MSN. i havnt got the message history option switched on, so it wasn't automatically saved in WebLogs. The person i was conversing with had no archive of this onversation.

Hi there, I just had a very important conversation on MSN, and at the end I tried to copy and paste it into Word so I could save it there. However, my computer crashed before I managed to copy it, and I was forced to restart my computer. Is there any was of retrieving the conversation?
