How to send email to a phone
SMS isn't just for sending text messages from one phone to another -- it's also a great way to get email messages on your phone.

Yes, you can get email on your phone! All you need to know is your cell phone's email address.

Most carriers have "SMS gateways" which take email messages from the Internet and deliver them to their customers' cell phones as SMS text messages. The trick is that you need to know what carrier the recipient's phone is on -- it's not enough to know their phone number. That's because the carrier determines what the email address of the receiving phone is going to be. For example, Cingular phones' address are all "something@cingularme.com" while Verizon phones are "something@vtext.com."

Sound complicated? It's not. All you really need to do is find your carrier in the list below, and then use the pattern shown there to figure out your email address. If you want to send email to a friend's phone, just ask them which carrier they use, and off you go!

(Note: For each carrier, I'll include a link to a page with more detailed information on how SMS works with that carrier, how much it costs, and where you can find more information. In the list below, just click any carrier's highlighted name to find out more.)

G-mail Labs has a feature that allows you to send SMS messages via the chat. You can also receive messages back. When you start typing in the little area where it shows "Search, Add or Invite" you'll get an option for SMS. Click on it to add the person and you'll get a window to type the message.

If it's under 10 digits (CSC), you should try this site. Most only allow full 10 digit numbers, but this one routes them through their GSM modem, if it's CSC. I ran a radio contest a few weeks ago, and we had a 5 digit code. I sent some test texts to our number, and it worked perfectly. A little delayed (maybe a minute or so), but still got there eventually. They allow 10 digits numbers too, those are much easier to test. Those come through almost immediately.

I had no idea you could send e-mail to a cell phone #. I told hubby about it, and now he takes photos on his cell phone and sends them to my e-mail address. (We don't own a digital camera - gasp!) In Europe since the person who receives an sms doesn't pay, in most cases there aren't any email addresses to send an sms to. But there are services such as GMX.net and Web.de in Germany that allow you to send sms by computer for a small fee. GMX gives 10 free per month. There must be a similar deal n most countries.

Well, not exactly about SMS but since this discussion falls into IMs on mobile phones, one can try Fring (it supports Chats in yahoo, msn, twitter, gtalk, & many more). It also supports sendng of files via the messenger, though not all messenger services are supported. It supports VOIP too & Gtalk users can use the mobile with Fring to save on international calling costs. Only requirements are a java enabled phone with an Internet Data plan / Wifi hotspot (if the phone has builtin wifi). Last but not the least, it is free.

I was able to send text using the groovypost.com tip that Kevin posted on March 10th. I copied all the services into note pad and inserted my phone in the front of each one. The I copied all of them into the To: fields and sent out a batch. My cell responded with two messages. I eliminated services until I had identified the two that worked for my cell. Then I tried my wife's cell and the two that worked for mine didn't work on her's so I repeated the process and found one that worked for her's. I suspect that each service is restricted to ranges of cell phones in their domain. In conclusion not all of them will work for all cell numbers.

The simplest way, well the ONLY way that I know(!) is if your mobile provider gives you free online texts every month. O2 in Ireland give us 250, the facilities on their site are excellent. Phone book, group texts and much more. I think most providers give free texts.

There is a new application available on Feb 27 where one can send and receive texts between computer and cell phone. Will also work with facebook and very soon many other networks such as myspace and bebo. One can use their site or sites such as facebook. One does not need an internet capable cell phone for this service.

The easiest way to send text's between PC's and cell phones is get a Yahoo ID sent up your e-mail and add the people along with there cell phone #'s to your "Contacts List" Then when u wanna send them a text just click on "Contacts" and click on there cell phone # and our message area will appear.I use this daily and its free to me and free to everyone that has unlimited text on there cell phone plan.

The problem with the xxxxx@telconame.com method is that it is not reliable and most of the time, the telco could throttle the traffic.

The only sure way ive found so far is as follows, have a friend Text a message to your email account (hotmail) as a cell-to-cell text message.
if you receive it in your inbox simply reply to whatever the sender was and it will work...example.

TELUS works as follows. send an email with your message to 5555555555@msg.telus.com the 10 digits being the area code and number, no spaces or dashes. and they willr eceive the message as a text, not an email on their phone.

i mnot sure what rogers and bell require you to do. This "trick" was free and worked the first time. it was how i sent phone pictures to my computer.

You never really answered this question but I can lend a hand. If he/she can hook their cell phone up to their PC, they can use the PC to send SMS messages. Jeyo has a product that can be installed on the computer to enable this function.

My Company "Progressive Technology & Innovations Inc" Is currently releasing a new personal GPS locator that uses a SIM card in it that on command will send via an SOS button on the device its current Position lat/lon via SMS text. It also works in reverse, you can send a text to the device and get its current position. I am looking for some sort of user interface for sending the text via PC and recieving the coordinates back to an email, then cut and paste or click the link to get the location in a more timely fashion. I am currently using the AT&T Go Phone SIM card, but it will work with any SIM card. Any Ideas?

Even if you don't actually have mobile Internet service, your cell phone provider might allow you to IM others anyway.

For Verizon, at least, I downloaded a mobile IM program from them that actually communicates with AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! servers by sending and receiving commands, information, and messages via SMS. I guess "gateway" or some such would be the right word for that? I'm certain other providers have similar functions.

Of course, the caveat there is that since everything is being sent via SMS, if you don't pay an unlimited flat fee for text messages the individual charges from numerous messages and possibly even signing in and out can rack up.

AIM actually confuses things a little further, in that you can use their service to bother anyone with a cell phone number and the ability to receive SMS text messages. By sending a message to a plus sign followed by the country code and full ten digit phone number ("+1 234 567 8900", but without spaces), it will attempt to send an SMS text message to that number. The recipient may be even capable of responding. Another gateway type thing?
