Here's a brief rundown on getting a static IP:

Most ISPs know that a static IP is far more useful than a dynamic IP for setting up remote login, web servers, mail servers, CCTV systems, etc.

Accordingly, they sell inexpensive consumer plans with dynamic IPs, and expensive business plans with Static IPs.

There is no way to 'convert' your dynamic IP to a static IP, since the IP is provided by your ISP.

BUT - there is a way to link your home computer to a service called dyndns, which gives you a web address that connects to their software on your computer, updating the IP address as your ISP changes it.

This is what I use to remote into my mac with my iphone from work, and it works like a charm.

I was told by my Time Warner that I am not able to log on to the internet becaause my IP address is not working. Is this something I can do by myself or should I just take it down to a computer repair shop.
Best regards,
Rocio

Unfortunately "IP address is not working" doesn't really make sense, so I'm not sure what the problem actually is.

I need your help and advise, Firstly, I call my ISP provider in order to get static IP address so they told I have to pay extra fee every month. Secondly, is there anyway I can get static IP address for fee?

I would be very happy if you could help me please,

My internet connection is behind a ADSL router and I configured my PC and router as said in this article, I assigned a static private IP to my NIC 192.169.1.2 and router Lan IP to 192.168.1.1 and configured routers WAN IP with static Public IP provided by my ISP and added my PC's IP address to port forwarding...

I read the article but I need to know what the settings for a Static IP for a DSL Modem and a Router? When all is configured correctly can my computer find the internet connected to the DSL modem? Or a Router port or both? I guess what I am really asking is should the Modem settings be "BRIDGED" and NO IP address? I am getting conflicting reports.

Most commonly you don't need static IP addresses or bridge mode. Leave the router in it's default configuration of "get IP address automatically" for the internet connection, and "DHCP enabled" for the local area connection. The router will get the internet IP address automatically, and then assign dyanmic IP addresses to local machines.

In my medical office we have no server. We have a VoIP phone system which provides us a T1 dedicated line out to the Internet. We also have an EMR system that we use for patient records. We chose to have the vendor of the software house the server on their end since we have no internal IT dept. So the vendor provided a Juniper router to allow our computers to connect to the software. Now the ISP for our VoIP has sent out a letter saying that they are giving us a new static IP address and that we need to make those changes. I will pass the letter along to the software vendor to make those changes to the router the provide for us, but do I follow the steps in the article above to make the changes to the all the office computers?

I'm guessing not, but it really depends on how that router was set up. You'll need to check with that vendor.

Hi Leo,
The article is simple and easy to follow.
I have couple of questions:
1. What if there have to be two web servers behind the router?
2. is port forwarding any way connected to NAT concept?

Thanks In advance,
-Kumar

1) it can be done, but only one web server can be on port 80, the other must be on some other port. That means configuring the router to forward that other port, configuring the server to listen on that other port, and users to access the web site explicitly specifying that other port (as in http://example.com:81).

2) It's part of the NAT concept. One one site you have local IP address, and on the other you have a public IP. You're translating IP addresses for all packets that cross through the router, regardless of direction.

You mentioned that you had your port forward different programs to different pc's and just wondering if i can use this type of system?

It is also because i want to create a new domain for this server and its users, and if possible i would restrict both servers from being able to communicate from each other.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated

Hi all!
I have an static IP adress and my conection works fine, until after some hours, 4, 8 or what ever it loses connectivity.
Every thing seems to be OK and suddenly there is no connectivity.
I think is something with my ISP DNS to do, because when I set the ipconfig/registerdns command, it works igen for a while, but it seems not to be the best solution.
What I have to do is unplug the modem (reset under a couple minutes) plug again and it works again, until the next 3,4 hours.
What can it be? TTL that does not map my ip or what?
I called my ISP, but they couldn´t solve the problem...
Any ideas?

I am having issue with my static IP address. I followed your instructions and was able to connect to the internet. I am using Windows XP. However, it seems that every other day my computer resets the IP protocol to "obtain an IP address automatically" and I have to manually input the static IP address along with all the other subnet mask and default gateway addresses. I can't figure out anyway to get it to stop. Every other day like clockwork it simply resets itself and I have to reconfigure the address. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hey Leo.
Im currently running a Speedstream router ADSL2+ directly into a Netgear wireless router and broadcasting to my laptop. I don't have any desktops connected to the routers. I was wondering how i could get my laptop to host games on Warcraft using port 6112. I've tried numerous guides about setting up Static IP's so that i can portforward from my speedstream, and I've tried assigning static ip's on my netgear and portforwarding from there, but nothing seems to work. Can you help me out here?
Much Appreciated

I followed your guide and have had everything working for a number of months now, THANKS!!

Now I have a new issue. My PC has 3 network adapters (2 wired and 1 wireless). I only use 1 wired and the wireless. The wired connection is the one I setup to have a static IP of 192.168.254.10. Now, I am needing to set my wireless to also have a static IP address. I followed the steps above once again, but it won't let me do it. I am getting a message that says, "Warning - Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network (such as intranet or the Internet). They will not function properly when the gateways are on 2 seperate disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the Internet). Do you want to save this configuration?"

If I choose yes, it proceeds, but will not properly connect saying something about "Unidentified network".

What do I do?

THANKS!!

Dear Mr.Leo,
I am beginner in Networking and I was going through your wonderful article
Will you able to clarify a doubt from my side?

I have an internet leased line with static IP's given by ISP
I am using DLink router and the static IP and DNS information given by the ISP is entered in the WAN section.
The private IP of router is 192.168.0.1 and I have a windows 2000 server in my LAN with the private IP 192.168.0.2 and I want to use the server as a webserver.
Please advice me how can I assign a static IP which is in the range 213.X.X.X to my windows 2000 server and how can i set it as a webserver so that it can be accessed from outside the LAN

Thanks & Regards

Dear Leo,
I have a question, i have an ADSL service with a dlink 310 modem(lan-Router). the isp gave me a username and password, i used it to connect, but at the same time i could connect to my isp using ip configuration without need to log on, i uses 172.16.1.70 as my computers ip, and 172.16.1.1 as server ip, 4.2.2.4 for dns server, no i changed my service to 512k, but my aacount with username and password has only 5GB each month, i can not connect to internet using IP configuration, if i could do that like before, so i could download more than 5 GB, what can i do? why i can not connect with ip anymore? how can i detect the ip adresse that i can put in lan settings?
Sincererly yours,

I currently have a wireless lan at home with my sister's computer being connected to the wireless adsl router via her computer's ethernet port and my computer connected via its wireless card. She used to get the error message "Shareaza may experience poor download performance as you are behind a nat router or firewall". According to the shareaza help site I configured zonealarm pro, set up a static ip address on her comp and enabled port forwarding on her router so Shareaza ( a p2p application like kazaa) could function properly which it did. Though the internet works fine on my computer i get the same message she used to get so again i configured zone alarm pro and made my ip address a static one....how would i do port forwarding since my comp isnt connected directly to a router? or dont i have to do port forwarding to fix this error? or is port forwadding not possible on a computer which has a wireless thernet card?

Hi Leo,

I am preparing for my CCNA certification. I purchased used Cisco routers and switches for my home lab to practice on. I did set up my home lab network and configured all the interfaces with private IP addresses, which I randomly picked, and also configured them with routing protocols (rip and igrp).

The configuration is fine within my network (between my Cisco routers and switches), and they are exchanging information. However, I could not make them talk to my internet connected computers.

I have two computers, which are connected to internet using Linksys VoIP broadband router and cable modem configured using DHCP/auto IP.

The Linksys router has 3 ports for connecting to computers and 2 ports for telephone line. This router also assigns up to 50 private DHCP IP addresses. I am trying to use these new IP addresses to reconfigure my home lab network routers and switches interfaces.

How should I approach it so that I can reconfigure my lab network interfaces with the new IP addresses and also establish communication between my lab network and computers?

Any help or suggestions you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Daniel

Well, it's hard to say because I don't have a clear picture of what you've set up.

Your router should be using a static IP from your ISP on the WAN connection. But you want your computers to use dynamic IPs, which would be provided by the router. Make sure that the router has DHCP enabled for the LAN side. That's actually exactly how I operate here at home.

I have a wireless LAN and I am fond of playing multiplayer games online. The thing is whenever I play them, I get disconnected from the game server that I connect to and also get disconnected from the wireless network (yes, that means no internet unless I go to disable the network connection and re-enable it again). Now, I've read that in order for games to work, I needed to configure their specific game ports. And so I did but I still keep disconnected. I have dynamic IP addresses and when I configrured the game ports, I only listed the first two out of the four possible IP addresses I can obtain(note that it's dynamic). Is there anything that I missed? Thanks for the help.

You need to open up the ports that the gaming server needs on your router, and indicate which of your machines that traffic should go to. It's called "port forwarding" in most cases.

I can't be too much more specific than that because the ports needed will vary based on your game, and how you set it up will vary based on your router. But hopefully documentation for both will allow you to get there from here.

When assigning a static IP address to a server on your LAN, behind a router, there is more to it than simply chosing an IP address outside of the DHCP range given out by the router. It also should be within the same subnet so that other computers on your LAN can see the server. Subnetting is a whole 'nother subject, but in the example given, had the server been assigned 192.168.2.2 or 192.168.3.2 it would not have worked. That is, the static IP has to begin with 192.168.1 (in this particular case due to the subnet mask).
