To be clear:

• If you have lost access to your account, I cannot help you. I am not Hotmail, I do not have access to anything that would allow me to help you in any way.

• Visit the Windows Live Help Solution Center as discussed in the article above. You may get some help there. You may not.

And to repeat myself for the too-many'th time: this is why I continually rail against using free email accounts for anything important. You get what you pay for. Anything you keep only in a free email runs the very real risk of being lost forever and without warning.

To whom it may concern:
I have been blocked out of my email account: [email address removed] and do not know the answer to my secret question and do not have an alternative email address in the account as it was set up nearly 10 years ago. I have gone to the Windows Live ID Help � Account Validation and Password Reset Information and I was told it would take 24 hours for someone to get back to me but it has been over 4 days now and no one has got bck to me. There is obviously something wrong with is system and the distree that I am facing as a result will have to make me take further action as I need some results that were sent to this account.
Please can I have some kind of response to this feedback.

First: I cannot help you. I am not Hotmail, I do not have access to anything that would allow me to help you in any way.

Second: it sounds like you've taken all the appropriate steps that I am aware of. I know of nothing more that you can do.

Third: in my opinion it's very likely that you will not regain access to your account. I know of nothing more than you can do.

Finally: this is why I continually rail against using free email accounts for anything important. You get what you paid for. Based on the questions I get it appears to me that your experience appears to be typical. Customer service is minimal at best. Anything you keep only in a free email runs the real risk of being lost forever and without warning.

I've tried logging into my account. I used my password and hotmail stated that I'm using the incorrect password. I pray I can get into my account as I have a lot of information on my email account. I find it very surprising that Windows live Hotmail does not have a direct phone number to give customers for issues like this.

I have tried three times to contact Hotmail.com because some criminal in Lagoss has SPAMed me for my password and I fell for it.
this person has changed my password and has been sending demands to people on my address book for money, saying I am stranded in lagoss.
I have been desparatly trying to contact Hotmail for assisatnce, but despite me trying this past week, no one has come back to assist.

Hi, I changed my password last week tuesday because someone hacked into it and sent spam. Right after changing it I forgot and I was not able to log in. I filled out a password recovery form with as much info in the account as possible. They said the longest it would take is 24hrs. That was tuesday today im monday of a new week...Im not sure If I was supposed to do something else of if they dont even look at it and all of my important documents are gone. I've been able to contact customer service, just state that you calling regarding your MSN Hotmail account - 866-939-7737. Ask them to walk you through the process. They will direct you to www.windowslivehelp.com (password reset). Hope this helps.. this is very frustrating; I wonder how long it's going to take them to reset my password afte submitting information for recovery?

Your email account has been compromised. The above account I had since 2002. I have contacted all the abuse e-mail addresses and no one has answered why my account was closed. I have spent so much money since my account has been closed with iyogi, a tech guy that built my latest computer and opened an msn account. Should'nt someone respond to me. All my files, contacts, pictures, medical information is blocked from me. I opened the account in 2002 on an army post in San Antonio. I just cannot understand that I have received nothing from windows live explaining what has happened and in the mean time I have an account that I cannot get to and if they would just respond to me this could get cleared up. Truly frustrated

"Shouldn't someone respond to me?" - No. They are under no obligation to do so. This is a free email account, and you're getting exactly what you paid for. This is why I so strongly recommend against using free email accounts as the only place to keep anything even vaguely important.

this guy or girl, whoever is trying to skam me.

Since last friday, now 4 days, I try to log in into hotmail, and once I enter my e-mail address and password is typed in and enter is pressed, the following address appears in the top line "http://sn112w.snt112.mail.live.com/default.aspx" and my comuter does not connect to Hotmail and so I'm unable to read my incoming messages, nor my contacts.
After a couple of minutes, a message appears "Safari can not open the page as th server does not react"
For your info: we are using an Apple computer.
Can you please help as incoming messages are very Important for me (church and funeral assistances).

I contacted you on another site a few days ago to complain about your recent change to signing in to hotmail. For security I always choose to use my password. I was able to click on sign in, type password, and click again in the same place. Now 'sign in' has moved lower so I have to move the cursor unnecessarily. How many movements will this add over a year? Thousands. Thought the idea was to try and have seamless transitions, and not to add extra useless wasted clicks or moves. And tonight - more problems! Trying to close my screen by using the white cross on red ground on rt hand top, kept getting, the 'do you wish to close all tabs' box!!! More unnecessary movements.I used to work for MORI - why don't you do something about decent market research?

Today I received an email claiming that it was from windows live. They used a few colors in the message to attempt to snaz it up a bit. There claim is do to some difficulites random mail addresses are being eliminated. They then requested that I give them a bunch of personal information including my password to account so they might do me the favor of assuring my account is not deleted. What a load of crap. Warning.. Tried to forward it to the real Windows people but it does not appear that there is any way to do so. Oh well I hope there is no one gullable enough to fall for this kind of crap. BEWARE of DOGS!!!!! Never give your password to anyone.

My computer was hacked by an AT&T representative so I contacted customer support and nobody had helped ne. It has been 2 weeks now. One representative tells me how to change my password ANC the next one tells me that they changed my password. Well so far that have no emailed me a temporary password to my other email so j will be able to get into hotmail. I have recently downloaded "Windows Live Mail"... It has some inherent problem, when you simply click on the windows live mail, a box will appear asking to put your email and password. But when if you go on the top right side and crosses or closes that box than automatically you sign in to your windows live mailbox. This is a security issue and it has to be dealt on with the first preference. I cannot understand why this bug was not rectified at the trial stage. However, make sure that this bug will be rectified on war footing because some one can easily got to your mailbox by just closing that login window. Please reply immediately to my email address.

My e-mail has been closed. How long does it take for them to investigate and get it up and running. This e-mail is for my non for profit organization and I need it operational.

There's no way to know. I've heard everything from next day to never. This is another reason I so strongly recommend agains free email accounts for anything truly important.

Dear MSN Hotmail,
I get all kinds of fishing mail and unwanted adverts from the United States. Even though I list them every time in my blocked senders list. I still receive these absolutely unwanted mails.
In my understanding these mails should not come in my unwanted mail / spam box. In my opinion is a blocked sender blocked and cannot enter my spam box / unwanted mail box.
My spam box is used only for unknown senders only.

It would be highly appreciated if blocked sender are absolutely blocked especially from the U.S. Since I live in Europe I have no interests in Americans loans or bargains.

Solve this big problem, it is very much appreciated in Europe.

If they're asking for your password in email, it's a scam. Only you should know it, and only use it when you login in (or do password-related stuff on the site it applies to).

I have a suggestion for the windows live people. I am NOT sure who to suggest it to. So here it goes and PLEASE pass it on to whoever it needs to go to. My suggestion is this. Since many cell phones come with thier own email address how about putting something in the contacts information page to put thier cell phone email address so when I or anyone clicks on a contacts name I can choose between thier personal or public or work or cell phone email addresses. Instead of having to have a seperate account for thier cell phone email addresses. Its just an idea post it somewhere (IF you want to) and see if you get any responses for it.

I keep getting emails from Windows Microsoft Center asking for my ID, password, date of birth, country, occupation and alternate email. Says if I dont provide this info I will lose my account permanently. I know this is not windows live hotmail sending this but I know of no way to turn them in which could save some people a lot of problems should they provide this info. ROBIN

They already know about it and are doing what they can (which is very little). Simply ignore the emails.

Hi, I received an email lately supposedly from a friend entitled Hi so I opened it and it was an advertising email telling me that my friend had purchased a phone and that I should do the same. The email to my recollection came with no attachment but a link to this product which I did not click. I deleted the email and the next day I started recieving emails from friends of mine who had received the same email from me. This thing had hacked my address book and then deleted all my contacts. Is there any way I can get them back. My account was not stolen I have no problem logging in, I have changed my password, is my account now ok? Thanks.

You should never confirm a password reset that you didn't explicitly ask for. Everything else is either someone trying to hack your account, or a phishing scam.

MSN blocked one of my email accounts. Why,I don't know.My major problem is to open email attachments
from other email sources. Attachments which use WMP always open. No other type of attachnent will open for me. I have tried all given info to no avail. Trusting my friends without knowing what the attachnent contains I forward all to other friends. I have been doing this for a long time with no problems.

My ISP is earthlink. For some reason hotmail is blocking e-mail to my sisiter who has a hotmail account. I contacted earthlink and they advised that the problem is with hotmail. I went to hotmail's postmaster page and filled a form about blocked access. The form really seemed to be for bulk mailers (which I am not), but it was the only contact information they had. How can I get hotmail to stop blocking my mail?

Hi Leo, MSN Hotmail prompted me to reset my password because I tried to sign in few times with the wrong password. Not really. I've become much too cynical when it comes to Hotmail. I know some people have had success doing what you're doing, but my experience is that once you've lost an account it's gone forever. If I had any advice it would be to move on.

I'd problems with opening a hotmail account since only 3 registrations are allowed per day per IP, which in my case is used by over 5000 college students. So, I asked the support team to enable more than 3 registrations from our IP, and the response was within 2 hours. So, the hotmail online support feature seems to be quite effective.

Apparently Hotmail cannot handle spam mail. They have shut down all incoming emails from @att, @bellsouth, @comcast, @rr.com and a few others. This was done (they say) due to people complaining about spam mail. Now, just so everyone knows, I am getting emails from my yahoo account just fine AND I am getting plenty of spam in my hotmail account. I just can't recieve any emails from my friends. And lucky them, they have no customer service....I need to get rid of my Hotmail account and move somewhere else, for good.

This is outrageos. I can not sign in just because windows live wants me to change password. I have the same password for last four years and i am NOT GOING TO CHANGE IT! As much as you want to keep the same password, it's a very, very bad idea, and could easily lead to your account being stolen - it's important to choose good passwords and change them periodically. Tools like Roboform can help manage them for you (I honestly don't know my online banking password, for example, but I don't need to - Roboform remembers for me.)

Ultimately, though, these should be your choices, I agree. I know of no way to force Hotmail to operate as you wish, and if they're not responsive then I regularly advise people to use a different service, exactly as you've threatened to do. It's often the right move.

So, windowslivehelp.com really is a Microsoft web site? Although I was already logged in to a Windows Live account, I was asked to sign in again to Windows Live before I could submit a question. When I clicked the "Sign In" button (in Firefox, thank God),

I was warned that the encrypted page was about to use an unencrypted connection to POST my account information,
The authority that issued the web site's wasn't a recognized certificate authority,
The certificate couldn't be verified because the issuing authority wasn't available online.

Sounds like a phishing site, and not a very sophisticated one, but here you say that it's legitimate? Is really any way to know which are Microsoft's web sites and which are phishing sites?

WindowsLiveHelp.com is legit. It's just stupid that they haven't coded that site to avoid the warning. They should know better.

MSN emails also has "stopped" us from signing in automatically now, so, the best thing to do is to convert to Yahoo mail. MSN is now "forcing" us to comply to all their "new" programs and we have no choice but to comply. So, lets all change over to Yahoo mail. Screw MSN. They create nothing but problems for us. Probably because some spammer is spoofing the "From:" address on some spam to look like it came from you - hence if/when the message bounces it goes back to you. Nothing to be done.

I have no idea why. I also have may hotel and air reservations on there that I need to retrieve. I also am getting now herewith their on line help. Its worse than EBAY at least you can talk to someone there if you have a problem. This is very fristrating has anyone actually gotten help with this??

I live in Montmagny, Province of Quebec in Canada. Since last Wednesday, hotmail isn't working for anyone around here and no one knows why. Some are waiting for job application replies, some are waiting for family news, etc. It's not pleasant and hotmail doesn't advise us of the problem which I think they should do because how long is it going to last ? Sorry to sound harsh but the salutary lesson here is that important data should never be stored via a free web-based e-mail service. As has been inferred by Leo, myself and others many times, you get what you pay for and, if it's free, you can't expect much, if any, customer service.

Hotmail, along with Yahoo!, is the first choice of spammers and, as a reliable service, doesn't merit consideration by serious users.

This is a classic reason I so strongly recommend never keeping important information in only a free email account. If something happens your chances for recovery are often slim.

How do I get to my Hotmail e-mail account so I can update personal info?

You login to your Hotmail account as usual, and then use the Options menu on the far right of the Hotmail page and select "More Options" there. Personal account information is in there.

Sunday I received an a message while logging on that my account had been closed or access denied due to a violation of the terms and use agreement. I have no idea why this would have occurred. I do not send out mass e-mails creating a spam issue and I do not send pornographic e-mails. I have no idea if someone else could have hacked into my e-mail and done so, but feel that someone should have asked me for some sort of response before they just close my account. I have very important saved filed and all of my contact information is in there and I can't access it. I have sent 2 e-mails to the address I was provided by the on-line support team, one Monday and one Tuesday and have yet to receive an answer. I even told them if they need me to change the address and they can just transfer my files and contacts over I would do that, but I have heard nothing and I have information in there I need to get at.

Please advise!!!!

I am really sick of not being able to see my entire email because of an annoying blinking ad on the right of the screen. I actually have to scroll over while I am reading my emails so that I can see all of the text. I find it remarkable that windows will not talk to it's clients. How can you remain in business? Other people will fix my problem for $59.99. Maybe windows own these places and it is their way to make money sence our e-mail live is suppose to be free. Iam 66 and some things are hard for me to understand but I do understand when a company gives bad service. This is very bad service. I had no problems until I got windows live. Now nothing but problems. How sad this company is for mistreating customers.

When I sign in to MSN A message in the mail tab tells me that Hotmail is temporarily "down" This has been going on for over a week! and yet not a peep from MSN about this problem can be found.
Also Mozilla Firefox has crashed and it's been down over a week. What gives??!!

Important

Windows Live Hotmail apparently suffered an outage of some sort. Inboxes (including mine) disappeared and a message that I didn't have one "yet" was displayed.

This is not your fault, and there is nothing you need do.

I got my inbox back by:

• Signing Out

• Waiting a while

• Signing back in

Nothing more was required, and my inbox was back.

Important Lesson: Backup and/or stop relying on free email accounts as the only place you keep important information.

I'm having continuous problems with not being able to forward emails or even accessing my contacts. The cursor just doesn't show up (eg when I try to forward something) . Sometimes after 10-15 tries the curor finally shows up and 'blinks' sometimes it never does (try another day!!!!!!!!!!!) The same with acessing the address book and trying to send an email to a selected person (IF I get that far!!)....if I get an address the curor again is very likely to not appear at all (despite numerous attemps . over and over again!!!! Why is this happening , and what can I do to fix this frustrating problem.....I wrote msnhotmail once before and I received no response. Thanks, Brad Murakami

I left MSN hotmail 4yrs ago.
There support really stinks.
And now it seems that yahoo is falling
right behind them.
What is wrong with these companys that
they can't support the end users?
Yet they have no problem spamming your
inbox with garbage ads.
There in control for now.

I have experienced a problem with live mail where when you click a link, such as this one from Leo's e-mail, I receive a message from windows stating it can't find the site. I've learned that you may have to retry as many as four times to get to the IE or Foxfire site.
