If your im goes direct from your machine to your buddies, you can get their ip address by doing netstat -a in a command window. That will show you all the addresses connected to your machine.

People, you MUST protect your PCs with a firewall (the Windows one at the very minimum, but it sucks), up to date anti virus, and spyware software (I like PCTools SpywareDoctor). An unprotected PC on the internet now gets taken over in less than 15 minutes! And you MUST patch Windows and all your applications.

Unless you do all of the above, it is as chancy as unprotected sex.

He was using IP 70.25.65.7 which is in Canada. I am wondering what all steps me and the people that were scammed must take. The paypal account we paid to doesn't have the funds still in it so we can't get our money back that way. How can we find the actual user info for that IP from the ISP and who (being in the US) do we have to contact to get that person arrested in Canada? Please reply by e-mail at least. Thanks! I'm trying to help a group (including me)!

Dear Leo, I understand that useing a IP address to get the pysical address of a given computer is a problem, as in my case where someone is trying to hack into my computer from an At&t sight in Albq.NM. But what if we have the host name codec? How does a person find a address or even better a phone number to contact that host?,,, for example (83.wl248.albq.attga31ur.dsl.att.net)with an IP address of ( 12.140.248.83 )? Isn't there a way someone could get a pysical address or phone number for that server or host?

What people are looking for is a way to track down a street address - a physical location where the computer in question is located. I will reiterate: that cannot be done by the average user without the assistance of the ISP that is providing that IP address. Of course the ISP knows the physical location - as you say, they have to - but they do not reveal it to just anyone, for obvious privacy reasons.

So the practical answer is, NO, you cannot locate someone physically with only their IP address.

I can not believe I'm reading such, well uninformed, information.

Okay, an IP address is very much like your personal phone number. You have to have one to talk and you have to have one to listen. Just like your phone addy an IP uniquely identifies you, not your isp, not your email server, but specifically YOU (at least a router or computer in your house).

It's simple, the ip address, even with DHCP is used along with a timestamp and you know exactly who you are dealing with (reverse georouting will turn an IP into a physicall address).

So given an IP addy and a Timestamp you know a persons physical location.

You can NOT track down who leased the ip address at a specific time unless you have a very good case and an judge orders the isp to give over there logs. Thats assuming that they still have the logs by the time the courtcases are done. If you live in Canada your going to have to have more money then the the recording industrys as they didn't even get the court order. Unless there has been death threats and the police are heavly involved then you will not be able to retrive this data. The only thing you can do is trace the ip to there isp or just compare the ips in the email that you have recived in the past.

You can send an email to the hotmail contact for abusive emails but in reality if the person is not a hotmail user (it is very easy to forge an email) then you are stuck. there is no easy way to find her. you can look at the tags at hte start of the email (you may need to forward it to another email address to pull all the information about that out) but again these tags will only give you a little information to track the person down if they dont know a great deal of how the interenet works. i suggest you search on tracking spam in google and go from there. this will give you information on gleeming the tag information and tracking a user down.

Ok, sorry, I have to throw in my two cents here. The "there's no way to know" is just a stupid answer. You can use any rwhois service to find the ISP who owns this address. Finding out which specific customer of theirs that is using the address is a different matter. However, if a law is being broken then you can go to a law enforcement agency. This gets tricky because of the laws in various countries, what treaties they subscribe to, and to what degree the law enforcement agencies in the various countries involved are willing to cooperate. Most cyber-crime is committed using an ISP that is not in the same country as either the victim or the offender.

This will still usually not yield the identity to you (again, depending upon the country's laws), but the law enforcement will be able to obtain that identity from the ISP in almost all cases (this is certainly the case in the US). If the offender resides in a different country than the hosting IP, then it gets even more complicated.

However, if a cessation of the activity is all you desire, this is often simplified with correspondence with that ISP. Some ISPs do not want their reputations damaged and their entire IP range banned! This is especially true if you are part of a larger media organization and such an action on your behalf would decrease the value of their service and to their legitimate subscribers! In such cases, the ISP simply cancels the offending subscribers account and they are forced to find some other way to harass you.

Now, if their client turns out to be, an educational institution or a business, the offender can be expelled or fired for abuse of IT utilization usage policies (this is nice revenge if you are lucky enough).

All in all, it can be a tedious process (I’ve done it before, in both criminal and non-criminal cases) and it can be very time consuming, can run up a phone bill (make sure you have a good international calling plan) and often results in a dead end. But results can be achieved! It depends upon how pissed this person has got you and how much time you want to spend on it.

You cannot tell who owns an IP address, only the ISP who owns the IP address. No one person every owns an IP address. It is leased for a specified time period. If something unlawful was done, then contact the abuse@*** address for the ISP(Don't bother with KORNET, they dont reply to anything, they are the Korean Government's Manager for IPv4)... Stop asking "how do I find out who owns this" It sounds as bad as asking "How do I find out someone's IP address"... For the most part, if you need to ask, you dont need to know...
