I'm not sure if an external hard drive will work on your car player, as external hard drives require a power source which it draws form the USB port of a computer. If you can get it to work, FAT32 is the format your mp3 music players can read.
I've never tried this, but it may be possible that using a USB Y cable and plugging the short USB plug into a cigarette lighter USB adapter might work.

If you plug an external hard drive into a USB port, the computer will normally assign a drive letter.

It's not a good idea to install Windows to an external disk. Even if you could get it to work you would have no end to problems. But just for the record, if you install Windows on a drive with existing data, the data is not destroyed unless something goes wrong with the installation. So a back-up is always in order.

Thank you so much, it really helped me a lot. Just a quick question, I have a 2TB external HDD, my friend suggested that I partition it into smaller drives so if 1 partition gets a virus on it I can just reformat the 1 and not the entire 2TB, do you have similar opinions on the matter?

There's some sense to it, but I don't typically partition anything unless I really have to for some reason. I'd leave it as one big drive. One problem is that a virus can infect your *computer* not just a drive - meaning that the virus could appear on all connected drives and reformatting just one would not necessarily get rid of it. MUCH better to focus on doing all the right steps to prevent getting infected in the first place.

"Best"? I'm not sure what would be "best" - that depends on why you're partitioning it at all. I'd leave it a single large partition myself, but if there's a reason for partitioning it then it's that reason that might somehow tell you what's "best".

Hi Leo,
Thanks a lot for this information about creating Partitions. It helped me to create partitions on my newly purchased External HDD.

Leo, Ive got a question: Why cant we use Windows Vista or 7 or any OS through External HDD? Is there really any way out?

Just think, isnt it convenient that we use PCs as Nodes & Just carry our External HDD instead of our Laptops. Connect the E-HDD to what so ever PC & you get your own environment there!!!!!!

Im maddy or incradible ?
Your Comments Plzzzzz.

I just installed a 500Gb internal SATA hard drive. When I go to partition it, (windows XP) the disk manager only offers a new volume wizard, which allows a simple volume only. This simple volume is not recognized by acronis which I was planning to use to reimage my old 80Gb drive onto the new 500Gb drive. Ideally, I'd like to use the new drive as my boot drive and the old one for backup. The question is, what can I do to make a partition that will be recognized by Acronis True Image?

Hello,Please help !!!
I have windows XP,but I wanted to upgrade/transit to Windows 7 using my WD external drive like bootable disk instead of bootable DVD disk,so here it is what kind of stupidness I have done:
1.Download Windows 7 iso file, which I put it in isoBuster and extracted.
2.Because I have listen it is better to make clean installation,I bought new WD external HDD- Passport Studio 500Gb and put it(cut-paste,not copy-paste) all information from my PC to HDD (around 90Gb very important data + windows 7 of course).
I didn`t format my External Western Digital disk !I didn`t convert from FAT to NTFS or things like that, just I have done this:
3.I run "cmd" and get in DOS
I wrote "diskpart"
I wrote "list disk” (Because there were nothing, not disk 1,2,3-i just select disk 1-don`t ask me why, because I don`t know for myself, because i am stupid!!!)
I wrote "select disk 1"
I wrote "clean"...but I change my mind, after 3-4 seconds, because I afraid for my data on the WD,does CLEAN was with meaning to erase all data on my WD,I still don`t know!
After i wrote "clean",I disconnect usb cable directly from my WD,because I afraid-what does "clean" means!!?? For god sake-i have all informations from last 6 years on my external hard disk and just there and nowhere else - not on my internal HDD,cd,dvd,blu-ray disks... all my data on WD external disk. Now,my WD doesn`t work!
When I checked Device Manager it shows that the device is installed and working properly but it will not show in "my computer" and I can't access it. before the problem,my HDD appeared as drive H:
In Device Manager say:"This device(WD PP III Studio II USB) is working properly"
disk: disk 1
type:unknown
location: 0
capacity: 476938
unallocated space: 0 Mb

When i connect usb cable(no matter short one or longer one or fire wire cable) there is the external usb hard drive showed up on the Safely Remove Hardware list right down, but I can not enter into the disk-inside and I am so afraid and desperate and don`t know what to do...
My PC has partition C: D: E: and for my DVD player and burner F: and G: Before the problem- my WD had letter H: and now there is no any letter for external WD :(
Please tell me what is the best solution for me to do now and to don`t lose my data on WD (if i already didn`t lost :(
I DON`T CARE ABOUT PC-IT IS EMPTY NOW,AND I DON`T CARE ABOUT XP,OR WINDOWS 7,JUST WD IS IMPORTANT NOW AND HOW TO OPEN DATA AND IS DATA THERE ON IT?!

What I have tried: connecting my WD with 3 deferent cables - usb and firewire in deferent ports.
installing drivers from wd site
I wouldn't be half as frustrated if it hadn't been working properly before this.Plus-ALL data is on my HDD,and I don`t even know if it is still there :(
Also i was in DISK MANAGEMENT,but except formating disk,I don`t see solution :( And formating will erase all data on the disk, isn`t it?! (if i have it,of course). again nothing :( :(
In DISK MANAGEMENT:
Disk 1-unknown 465,76Gb not initialized
There is black bar and unallocated 465,76Gb
Disk 0 basic C: primary partition and healty
D: and E: partitions also healty and they are with blue bar(not extended, but logical drive)

Also,I used Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, but the software didn`t report any errors for the drive!
Everything is fine with USB ports, fire wire port, also with cables-long one, short one…
Led indicators are on-they lights and the sound is normal.
Drivers are fine too,Device Manager say-no conflict, everything is good...
But the HUGE problem is still present :( :( :( and my 3 main questions are:
1.Why I can not open my WD?
2.Is there my data on it?
3.If there is not my data, what is the % to recover/return back all informations?

It will be everything ok if I re-install Windows xp ?!(I have bootable XP DVD disk)
Or if I repair Windows XP through installation process?
Do I have problem with MBR ?
Should I format my WD ?
Common,I am sure that there must be way to solve the problem with my external disk to open my data or if the disk is empty to return/recover the data somehow!
Thanks in advance !!!!!!
There is no choice. Adjusting NEW value to reduce partition size ends up in screen showing values new equal to current values. The disk is not empty. Size reduction is less than existing data amount (lots of space).
PM8 works fine with built-in disk.

Must echo Ajit's comments above. Nice to see this sort of thing explained so well and with such clear english. When I put XP Pro onto a new HDD the other day, it prompted me to create a partition, and I did that, only to now find that most of the hard disk is listed as Unallocated, and I am so far unable to do anything about it. If I try to follow the "wizard" in Disk Manager, it seems to work but then keeps coming up with an error. Must be some way around this....I am sparing you the lengthy details, of course, but hope to use your article to sort out the problem. Thanks again!

Paticularly what I liked most was there was no ambiguity whatsoever and where ever possible, the instructions are backed by logical reasoning. Thanks a million. Keep the goo work going.

Thanks again for simple yet informative article.

All I can think of is that you likely cannot delete the system partition while it's in use. Thus you may have to boot from another media (much like what it takes to reformat the system drive).
