I have Windows XP Home Edition that has been pre-installed and has no CD with it - but I want to locate the Windows backup facility which is apparently on the CD. Am I able to find and access this facility, and if so, where is it please? I can see lots of folders called I386 and MSFT, but can't locate NTBACKUP file. If it isn't there, how do I get hold of it without having to buy an XP CD (expensive?!).

I got an imagine copy of windows on my computer and still have the key code. what im not understanding is how do i reformat my HDD and reinstalle windows XP. I dont know a lot about computers but from my understand all will be erased off the HDD to include this imagine copy of windows and then im sitting here with a key code but no way to down load it. Am I wrong or is there another way to get around having a key code and no cd and need to reformat the HDD?

thank you
Leland

Exactly. You can't. Unless you have a Windows Setup CD you cannot reformat and reinstall. That's why I keep saying you need to insist on getting one from your computer vendor.

Why doesn't Microsoft (or PC manufacturers) provide free full version Windows downloads to assist with the cheapness of these new laptop makers not including an install disk with the sale of a new laptop? They can keep the key because the product key is included with the laptop anyway. It might behove them to let customers use a free version for 30 days before buying anyway, like a beta version. And if you have the qualifying key to unlock it, whats the harm?

Because many laptop and other manufacturers actually have slightly customized versions of the OS. And even though it's all key based, I think they thinking is that a download would increase piracy anyway.

You said:

>>>ypically the "Insert CD" message has only an OK and Cancel button. Press OK, allowing it to fail. The next dialog will typically ask you to provide the location of the CD-ROM; just type in the full path of the I386 directory you discovered above.

My dialog box says "Insert your winxp cd.." and has "retry" "cancel" and "more information" --none give me the option to navigate to a different folder. Retry gives the same error. Cancel says "Are you sure you want to skip this file?" If you say yes, it continues and skips it, if not, it returns you to demanding the CD> MORE INFORMATION tells you the reason your cd isn't there is that it isn't there (groan) or your cd drive isn't working. Remarkably helpful, that!

Hi
I have a dell OptiPlex GX150 that came pre-installed with XP pro and no cd, I have a product key for XP professional used on this computer.

The dell is now telling me I have an error and comes up with a blue screen. I cannot get past this. I called Dell and they said I basically need a new hardrive/computer. Computer is 7 years old.

I have an XP Prof cd for my Sony laptop (now 10 years old and still going strong except for room). I am aware that the Xp cd can only be used on one computer. However, is there any way I can repair the damage on the dell with the XP Pro cd used on the Sony laptop and then put in the product key from the Dell onto the dell. Is this even possible? Otherwise we will be up for another computer. (Sigh) Any other ideas?

Thank you
Helen

I also only have the three options, retry, more info, cancel (no OK button). When I hit retry it asks for the CD again. When I hit cancel a message box says do you want to do this, etc. If I say no it goes back to the original three options. If I say yes it moves along to the next error with no option to give the path for the i386 folder. After going through this with all the errors I thought it might ask for the path before shutting down but NO.
Any help you could give me here would be greatly appreciated.
Your site is a God-send. Keep up the good work!

Yes, you need get a Windows XP Installation disk somehow.
Purchasing one seems like the best approach. (In the future,
I strongly recommend making sure that when you purchase a
I simply wished to do a system restore on my Dell Dimension 1100. The error codes that came up and other information I had been given led me to believe that my hard drive had gone south. I replaced my hard drive. Now I have the "No OS Found" and am asked to insert the OS set-up disk. Nothing I do seems to work. Dell will not speak to me because I do not have the extended warranty, and they did not provide any kind of restore disk ..... Please advise me of my options. Do I have to purchase a XP CD to get it going again or what?

Not to worry, it's actually pretty simple. Typically the "Insert CD" message has only an OK and Cancel button. Press OK, allowing it to fail. The next dialog will typically ask you to provide the location of the CD-ROM; just type in the full path of the I386 directory you discovered above.

Not true , I did all above and it did not ask for the location of the CD-ROM

thank you, Bob

I just got a brand new computer, custom built. It didn't include a CD, but I thought nothing of it. Now I find out that to add a language pack I need that I do in fact need the disc. The hard drive's got nothing.

I don't have very much money, so getting a new copy is out. Is there anything else I can do? I've thought about asking the people who built my rig to send me the disc, but they're 600 miles from where I am (I bought it on a trip) and that might be a problem...

Just to follow my own post, I did read all of the comments here, and someone said that if you set HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath to the parent of the i386 directory (which is C:\ in my case), then SFC will know where to look and not bother me asking for a CD. Well, I looked in the registry, and my SourcePath is already set as C:\, and like I say, SFC bothers me with needing the disk. I also read that others say you can burn the i386 folder to a CD and it'll make SFC happy, but another poster said what I fear I would find which is "what if it wants (as mine does) disk 2?", and I didn't see anyone have a response to that question. So, Leo, let me know please if you can clue me on on what to do from here. Thanks!

I have the same issue as tamba (above). sfc scans my computer and tells me that it needs the CD, but all I get are retry, moe info, or cancel. Even though I have a nice \i386 directory, it doesn't let me point at it, and so all I can do is cancel. It asks me the same question about ten times before SFC just gives up and shuts down.

Please advise

my computer came with windows xp home edition already installed, i have no problems with it, but i want to make a copy of it incase somthing goes wrong. i've got the product key and everything else for it, but i haven't got a burner on my computer to burn a copy to a cd. is there a way of copying a copy of it to somewhere else without haveing to use a burner e.g floppy disk. and if there is do i just go into my computer right click on drive C click copy go to the place i want to copy it to then click paste.
please let me know as it would be very handy to have a copy of it incase something goes wrong.

Hey Leo..Well I found the I386 directory with winnt and winnt32 but when i clicked on winnt32,it said it couldn't continue the setup because the version of windows on my computer is newer than the one on the cd. The cd drive, of course, is not responding to anything, which is why i wanted to just do a complete reinstall anyway. Any ideas?

Leo, I don't have an installation cd for Windows xp so I tried copying the I386 folder contents which included both winnt.exe and the winnt32.exe files onto a cd. When I tried to do the scannow it will eventually give me a "need the cd message with only "retry, more Information and cancel options". None of these will take me to a browse for cd window. Do you have any advice. Thanks, Gary T

About sfc with no cd. I have run into a problem with this that makes no sense to me at all. 1. I do have the cd, but when prompted for it the system doesn't recongnize it and I get some goofy cd label in my computer, not the windows logo with the cd Windows version title like I normally see. But the auto start does run and and I can read the contents. 2. I have the I386 directory copied to the hard drive in the root of c: and 3. I'm not getting the option to browse for a path to the setup files. and 4. I'm being prompted also for a service pack 1 cd with no option for browsing to it either. Is there a command line or registery solution to tell windows where these files are located?
Thanks in advance,
David

I am in the same boat with Tim Latto. My computer is shot so after a call to Dell they sent me the "Operating System" CD. However this didn't work at all. I still have no programs what so ever! They said they could also send me the Resource CD and Application Back Up CD. I'm wondering if either of these will work to restore the system to where it should be. However - here is the question... I don't have an XP CD. I do have the Cert. of Authority - How can I get a copy of XP without paying for it all over again!!???

I accidentally deleted some of my Windows XP components in "Add/delete Windows components". When I try to add the components back I get an error message stating the copy couldn't continue and I should specify the location of the components (should be in Windows/:C/i386) or install the Windows XP CD. XP was pre-installed on my machine and I created a recovery disk myself. I enter the i386 folder (or the individual files asked for within i386) and I still get the error message. I tried using system restore to earlier dates, but that doesn't work either. I don't want to do a full reinstallation of XP since the machine runs OK. I just want to get those missing XP components (Accessories, Networking, etc.) back. Any ideas?

It's possible, but not easy if you're not familiar with the tools.

You'll need to find or create some kind of boot floppy (bootdisk.com would
be a place to start) that when booted, recognizes the CD-ROM drive. If
you can do that, you can run setup.exe or winnt.exe from the I386 files.

And that's all *if* the I386 has what we hope it has - a full copy of
the original installation files.

Yet another reason I always insist on getting the Windows CD from the
manifacturer to start with.

Good luck....

well I have a really big issue, my computer for some reason, started turning on but didnt get to the windows xp boot screen, instead it got to a black screen, and stayed there. So then I tried booting it in safe mode, and all i got was an error saying "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe". This I managed to figure was the famous boot file which always got ruined when modifying your boot.ini, but I never even did that -.-, so I researched the solution, all to know I needed my "windows xp cd recovery console" which I had long lost decades ago, and now I lie with an old computer with pretty important files, not working :S.. feel free to email me with any sort of solution, im willing to attempt much of anything..
