No. Reformatting your hard drive erases everything. You'll then need to reinstall Windows which then includes IE.

To those needing the original restore discs... I had the same problem with an XP eMachine; eMachine refused to help me because it is considered a "legacy" (read, out-of-warrenty) box. Found www.restoredisks.com. They maintain a large library of discs from various makes. I found my model quickly and this will be a BIG savings over purchasing a new copy of Windows.

The short answer is that you probably cannot. That's what the recovery software means by "erase your hard disk" - it erases your hard disk. After recovery and installing whatever you've re-installed it's likely that all your old data has been wiped out. Typically this is another reason why regular backups are so incredibly important.

ok dennis to use the restore cd press the f10 button that should be the boot menu.. if not check it when your computer starts up cause it should say anyways if you get that then put boot from cdrom and that should do the trick.

I have never ever had to contact emachines until now...years later. The computer has held up well. I am trying to restore my system due to it being slow now, but I cant figure out how to make the restore cd work. They told me they cant help with a simple question because my warranty has worn out. I informed them I wouldnt purchase with them again if that was the case. I still dont know how to use the restore cd. If anyone knows (and if you can use with a wireless keyboard) let me know.

The told me I only need the first 2 discs, then they told me put in disc 1 leave it in. shut the machine off, then turn it on and it should work, It does not work, any real ideas on what to do??

I have had problems to restore my 390 back to factory settings using the restore disk. It a bit dated now but the ghost / imaging script that handles the restore process does not account for an additional cd/dvd rom drive. So if you are having problems try swapping to another disk drive.

Colin---I am having the same problem with mine and was going to buy the recovery disc until I read your post. Now I'm going to take it to a local shop and have them fix it.

To buy a new recovery disc it is $20.00USD. Because was not in my box when I bought the damn thing. And was supposed to be sent a new one but to date have not received. This machine is under a year old. They just lost my business forever.

I have an Emachine computer that keeps rebooting but not starting windows xp. It says that the config.sys file is corrupted and then gives me the options to start in various safe modes or last known configuration. Neither works. It tries to load but nothing , keeps restarting. Does this over and over again. Tried using restore disk, says that its completed restore, but when asked to reboot. Same thing over? Does you know the solution to this problem?

Dear Sir/Madam,
I had acquired an e-machine computer through a friend in the States but it is now not working as it is supposed. It is requesting for the SP 1 of the original disc which the one who sold me the computer did not give me. It is an E 3085 model. My technician diagnosed it first for memory which when replaced worked well. But now the three CDs 1-2-3 cant be fomated. It gives the signal as though the harddrive is corrupted.
Please help otherwise the computer is good for my uses.

You've got to pull the hard drive from the old puter put it in the emachine then run the disc.You may have to format the hard drive first.It ought to work,but you might just lose your 98se.Good luck!
