i have lost my windows xp detup disk and i want to format my laptop (which already has win xp sp3 on it) then reinstall win xp to speed it up a bit

i dont have the i386 folder on this laptop either so i cant get the installation files

Contact the manufacturer or wherever you purchased your computer and get a Windows Installation CD (not a recovery CD). You need one.

Hello, I've actually facing a corrupted/missing \windows\system32\config\system

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. I don't have the CD too.

I've just update my Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3 from Microsoft Website. It seems to have fix the problem. During the install; it update, and do some sort of things. It does update the registry also, if I'm not mistaken.

So I was wondering have my corrupted/missing \windows\system32\config\system
being fix after that?

I have no windows xp cd and there is not a copy on my computer. Do I have to buy a copy or can I find one some where. Please help! I really dont want to have to purchase one when I supposably already did that when I bought the rebuilt computer. I had windows XP home edition correctly installed in my computer but, for any stupid reason I started installing Ubuntu (Linux) but the light suddenly stopped during the instalation. Now I try to install ubuntu but i can't i want to get windows back. Right now i'm working with a liveCD of Ubuntu that allows me to try it but i can't fo anything else with my PC

I'm in the same position as everyone else here. I can't even install the Recovery Console, for F's sake!!!

Is there noplace you can BUY a stupid Installation CD for your system somewhere??? Sheesh!!!

Depends entirely on where you got your computer. You can always purchase a retail copy of Windows from Amazon or other places.

I have no Windows XP CD and the jerk who built my PC did not image the I386 on my hard drive. All I want to do is change a system configuration option, but when I try to do this from Control Panel I get prompted to insert CD/give path which I don't have at all. This is a pc with Windows XP Pro. I do have another CD with Windows XP Home from a different PC. Can I borrow this one or will the Home/Professional difference nix this?

I'd give it a try. If it works, it works. If it fails, it won't harm anything. I'm guessing you'll have to get or borrow an XP Pro CD

It depends on *how* you reinstall Windows. You should do a full backup first anyway, so no mater what you do you'll be able to recover anything.

I have lost my win xp cd. With your help i did find the image on my hard drive under I386 with winnt32.exe. When I attempt to run it this is the error I get "the version of windows installed is newer than the image you are attempting to install" is there a work around for this. I was trying to re-install windows xp and it didn't complete. I want to reformat my harddrive and cannot do so because windows setup application temporary files are still in use somewhere and I'm not allowed to delete everything off of my c:\NTFS partition. How do I get rid of these files so I can wipe the slate clean? I have Generic Host Process win32 errors and svchost.exe errors that are haunting me. I have tried everything out on the interenet suggest to remove the errors but nothing works. HELP!!!!

Boot from your Windows installation CD and you can reformat the main drive.

My taskbar and start button is missing so i did a search on it on my computer and found a shortcut to explorer.exe and so now though when i turn my computer on i have to go through windows task manager>file>new task>then i type in my documents>then click internet explorer>then i made a shortcut on the desktop so i go to my desktop from there and double click the shortcut and it comes up but its not the original color its classic but anyways to my point. The point is how do i fix it back to the way it should be. Coming up on its own and being back to regular color? Please help.

Why is it that years ago they would provide a hard disc of the Windows system...but now they only supply a card with the key code written on it? I would like to get an original hard disc of my operating system - Windows XP home edition. How can I go about getting one without having to go to a computer store or other sales venues and buy one? I've paid for it once when I bought this computer...so why can't I get one free????

You mean a CD, not a "hard disk". A hard disk is what's installed in your computer already.

This is a choice that manufacturer's make to save money. You should contact the manufacturer of your computer and insist that they include a CD of the OS when you purchase your machine.

I had a problem with my windows system/32 file being corrupt, took it to a guy who as it turns out knew less than me. he wiped my hard drive and then, I think used a windows service pack 2 CD and now it's in a bad way. I am in a dillemma. Kindly help me. I have a toshiba portege M400, and i tried loading the os, that came with it (xp), but it doesn't. I tried reinstalling xp, only for it to stop, and asks me to press f3, telling me that no hard disk is found. According to a lot of browsing, i know i havee to make a bootable cd of xp servicee pack 2 or 3.( slip streamed, of course). i got this link, (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/resolving-setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives-during-windows-xp-installation/, and really cant go further, after nlite stopping copying my xp files. Have tried to run both winnt.exe and winnt32.exe, with no luck. Says that the version on the PC is newer than on CD ( I assume the HDD ).
I get error along with that, that the dialougue box does not allow me to click Continue, as it is shaded out! Very stuck.. Was in attempt to fix rather random Registry deletions...

I'm in the same boat aswell, do not get an option to choose a path !!!! Another site reccomended doing this ----->
When the service pack is installed
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
3. Right-click ServicePackSourcePath, click Modify, type %windir%\ServicePackFiles, and then click OK.

When the service pack is not installed
1. Copy your build binaries (i386) folder to any location. For example, copy the i386 folder to %windir%\Options.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
4. Right-click SourcePath, click Modify, type %windir%\Options\i386, where Options is the folder that contains the i386 folder, and then click OK.

But that doesnt seem to work either is it possible to just go into I386 and open the need file as I dont want a total start from scratch set up just want the bugs repairing ??

I get the "insert CD2" as well on SFC, however it does NOT give you the opportunity to pick C:/I386 it insists on inserting a CD. Is there anyway around this please? I get it that sometimes you are asked if you want to browse and this fixes the issue. IT DOES NOT give you the chance to do this.

I cannot sign onto some (not all) secure sites, I have tried, Deleting cookies,temp int files etc.Tried new user profile,disabled firewall,reset IE preferences, for trusted sites etc etc.enabled cookies,active X.
run sfc /scannow it said some 'dll files are missing' I dont know what that means!!!!

I have the same problem at Kevin reported to you on 1/14/07. It seems that alot of people have the same issue and no answer is attempted. Would anyone like to try? my computer says the hard drive might be corrupted. i have tried reinstalling the system but the message keeps coming up after...sometimes during the reboot. does this mean my hard drive is done for? i have been using an old windows xp and key though because i lost my cd and my new key wont work with the old cd.

Near the end of the sfc bar, this pops up:

Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now.

[Retry] [More Information] [Cancel]

retry gets:

Windows File Protection
The CD you provided is the wrong CD.
Please insert the Windows XP Professional CD2 into your CD-ROM drive.
[OK]

More info gets:

Windows File Protection
Possible reasons for this problem:
You have inserted the wrong CD. (i.e., a different Wondows product CD than the version installed)
The CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning.

5 times this insert cd2 message comes up.

my question is, CD2? when did windows xp get a cd2?

Hello, I came across your article while searching for a solution to an SFC problem:

In the article, you note that "sfc may ask for your installation CD-ROM. (See [the finding a disk image] article if you don't have one.)" However, sfc is producing this message "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now." No matter what I hit (Retry, More Information, or Cancel), it never asks for the path where the Windows files can be found on the disk, and I cannot feed it the I386 folder. (Oddly, it also neither recognizes nor rejects the Dell CD that came with my computer - instead of saying that it's the wrong CD, it just pops the same box up again.)

In addition, after clicking Cancel a few times, it asks begins to occasionally ask for an XP Pro Service Pack 2 disk.

I am considering just manually copying the dllcache folder from one XP system to mine, but is this safe? Any other possible solutions please? Thank you!

If you have the i386 directory then you should check out a program called nLite. You put the i386 path in nLite, make any tweaks you desire within the program, then it can create a burnable cd image for you. Using this method you can make a new XP cd. I do recommend, however, to make a copy of the i386 folder and use that as the path since nLite makes the modifications directly to the folder you provide. So if any mistakes are made you will still have a clean i386 directory to work with.

I don't believe a recovery disk will work - that's one reason I so strongly recommend that you get physical CD media with any new computers.

The other CD might - I'd definitely give it a try.

My Win XP_SP2 Home Edition came with my computer, (Sony Vaio). However, I did make Recovery Disks. Can I use the Startup recovery disk when asked to insert the CD? If not, I also have the CD for Windows XP, since I installed it on a previous computer. Since my present computer has an OEM version of Windows XP, can I use the Windows XP CD when running SFC /scannow?

Just to let you know i managed to figure it out.
I had to change the sourcepath AND move the 1386 directory as sfc would not locate it EVEN though the path was correct.
Sfc has since went from start to finish WITHOUT once asking for cd....Even though you did`nt get round to replying it was still this site that got me going in the right direction(eventually)Good stuff!

i mabey forgot to mention that i DO have the required files in the 1386 directory,i just CANT point sfc /scannow towards it and i cant reinstall as im using newer version..Theres NOTHING on the pc that im worried about keeping si i would`nt mind it scrubbing itself and reinstalling....ANYTHING just to fix it
