I was making backup copies of files. Unbeknown to me when I click and drag on my laptop I must hold down the ctrl key to drag a copy otherwise it moves the file. This works different from my home PC and as a result I inadvertently cut the favourites out of the system. How do I paste a copy back where it belongs?

Smiple they are just small files and folders. Just create a new folder on your desktop then drag and drop them into that folder. Now copy the folder to a CD or floppy or print them out.
