Hey, also, SVCHOST is not a virus. It is perfectly normal to see several copies of this running in the background. They are Service Processes and are supposed to be there. Some can be removed using device manager but if you do, you may crash or reset the system. Leave them alone.

Just thought I should mention that.

OK this is real easy. First, if you change your display adapter, you need to install the specific driver for that display card (if your version of Windows doesn't recognise it) Probably a good idea to download the latest driver from the manufacturers web site.
Second - If your display keeps reseting the resolution/colours, then it's either using the default XP driver or you may be in "safe mode". If in "safe mode" then your troubles may lie elsewhere. If not, as before, download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturers web site.

Greetings all.
I too had this problem on two of my servers (2K3). I resolved the problem by:
1 Run Chkdsk on the C: drive.
2 Uninstall the latest XP service patch (KB923414) (Don't reset after this)
3 Reinstall the display drivers and reset.

I tried reinstalling the display drivers first and this didn't work (neither did the ChkDsk), but if you do it in this order it works (at least it did for me).
Oh. It may be a good idea if you didn't reinstall the KB923414 patch as this causes it all to happen again.

Hope this helps.

31 comments about the same problem, and I can't find the right solution for my problem anywhere. I've spent 2 - 3 hours a night for 3 weeks trying to resolve the problem and nothing seems to work. I've reinstalled drivers, updated Windows XP, ran antivirus scans, bought System Mechanic and got all categories up to "good." Still, when you reset the display resolution and hit "apply" or "ok" it goes back to 4-bit! Safe mode looks great, but in regular mode it's awful! ANY suggestions would be appreciated!!!

This is the first problem(s) that using google hasnt helped me with. The display settings are locked to minimum (800x600 and 4bit colour) this was preceded by system process hogging all leftover cpu causing my computer to be slow (for some reason this also prevented cd drive from opening?). This is the first time in 24 hours my pc has had a cpu below 100% and that's because i held shift down at startup. I still dont know how these problems were caused (so i dont know how to stop them from happening now or again) and wether they are linked.

Any help would be appreciated

I had the same problem, my screen resolution was at 400 X 300 and 4-bit colour depth this morning. Looked on Symatnec.com for a virus but also downloaded new drivers from nvidia (i have an FX 5200), I Ran the installation and rebooted and now all is good, must have been corrupt drivers! So I'd advise re-installing the drivers for whatever card you own!

wow, Sounds like a trend. My pc froze so I rebooted and somehow ended up in bios. I closed and rebooted but then my monitor wouldn't work. It had defaulted to the onboard video card so I reset it to my add on card (Nvidia Gforce2 mx/mx 400). After that I couldn't change from 640x480. I have tried my emergancy disk (pc couldn't read) , rescue disk (same thing) Windows ME disk is missing, and have added every driver update (repeatedly..... adaptor AND monitor), I even tried to do a restore but it wouldn't work (I had to download a patch). sso I am completely lost and out of ideas.

I feel stupid because it did this when I installed the monitor, plus one other time and short of reinstalling the Win ME, I don't know what is different. I even tried using my Windows 98 to see if there was a missing Windows based driver. I thought about looking on the Windows XP disk my son has but was afraid it would make things worse. I have eliminated a bunch of programs (to free memory) defragged, system clean, virus check, adware programs. I have consulted both self help suppor and Tech support for the Video card, monitor, PC, and Windows website, as well as doing windows updates. So far the only fix I have found is to set the pc to 16 color, restart and then the slider is back BUT once I change it, the pc reboots and the problem is back. BTW, the pc shows a second display, which DOES have a slider that works.

I'm pretty good with computers and I've tried everything but nothing has worked. Is this a virus or spyware? I've run two different anti-virus programs and two different anti-spyware/adware programs and they haven't come up with anything. I haven't changed any setting or drivers in like 2 years. Please let me know what the deal is. Thanks.
