Thanks for the info. I use the Viewer and love its simplicity. Open a picture and then use the arrow keys to scroll through the images in that file. Easy to find stuff. It was removed from my partner's computer. He was jealous (had to open-close, open-close!). I might use this as leverage before I tell him how to fix!

Thanks again

Helped a lot!!! The easiest for me was putting the commands in the start, run section. I had a problem with NERO wanting to open it and I was happy with the window fax viewer. When I took Nero off as the default, it kept wanting to save the file instead of opening it. After doing the command, it reverted back to the windows picture and fax viewer. this was very helpful. thanks

Evidently Windows Picture & Fax Viewer is not my default viewer. When I go to "My Pictures" and right click on a thumbnail, the first thing on the dropdown is "open". If I click on it, it comes up in "Picture Viewer" which shows just gray or a picture which looks like a red negative. If I go on down to "preview" in the dropdown, it opens fine in "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I use Outlook Express; and when I try to open the attachment picture, "Picture Viewer" comes up, and I can't view the picture as it's just gray or like a red negative. I scroll down to the picture below (which is too large to view) in the email, right click and save in "My Pictures", go there and click in the dropdown on "preview", and I can view the picture. How do I get "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer set as the default viewer?

Not that I'm aware of, it appears to be specific to Windows
XP or whatever version it might be running on.

My recommendation is actually to dump Windows Photo Gallery
(And Windows Picture and Fax Viewer) and get a tool like
IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com/ or FastStone Image
Viewer http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

I posted a message three days ago. Since then I have managed to download a version of SHIMGVW.DLL and have put it into my laptop's SYSTEM32 sub-directory. I then tried both "solutions" - the "Run" one from Leon and the fuller version in the Tools facility in Windows Explorer.
The "Run" solution ended up with a "success" message. The "Tools" solution appears to have modified the options to a certain extent, but WPFV still does not show up when right clicking on a .jpg file.
When trying to open a .jpg file with WPFV an error message now appears (progress??) to this effect:
Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\ahimgvw.fll
One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found

I had previously tried re-installing Windows ME on the laptop from the Microsoft CD, and this would - presumably - re-install all of the relevant library files - should I try this again?

Ask Leo: What if I *want* Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?

I have just read through all the HUNDREDS of responses to this thread, and tried every possible fix listed. I had to recently uninstall Photoshop and re-install it. Before this set of operations if I previewed a .JPG image it would open in the Windows fax and image viewer. If I double clicked it, it would open in Photoshop. I would like to restore that set of actions. Each fix I tried tonight made both the preview and open options the same. How can i split them back up?

If shimgvw.dll is already in the system32 directory, despite what Windows error messages say, then you have the same problem as me and I'm still looking for the solution.

Leo, do you have any suggestion please why Windows would report file not found when it's clearly visible?

Hi Leo

This one has got me stumped. I’ve been right through this article and my Windows Picture & Fax Viewer still isn’t working. I can view images in other apps.

1) Viewing images as thumbnails or filmstrip displays nothing
2) Opening files in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer brings up error box:
> RUNDLL: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll. The system cannot find the file specified

I’ve tried re-associating by all 3 of the methods listed in this article (via “Always open with”, via Folder Options & using Command Prompt) but no change.

I’ve tried replacing shimgvw.dll with a new downloaded copy (twice) then re-registering it with [run: regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll], but I get error box:
> RegSvr32: LoadLibrary(“shimgvw.dll”) failed – The system cannot find the file specified.

I’ve run a registry fix from eusing.com, which claimed to fix 1500 or so bad registry keys (failed associations etc), but didn’t fix this.

I’ve run System File Checker [run: sfc /scannow] as suggested in the article but it didn’t find anything.

Final note, from around the same time my WP&FV failed, I’ve also had “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000034)…” errors when trying to open some other applications. So far I’ve seen it on Windows Media Player, My Pictures Screensaver, and my broadband provider’s in-house protection package NTL Netguard.

I’m hoping it’s not a Trojan, but I can’t see any suspicious processes running.

Help…!

FABULOUS! A newbie to XP, some program or another hijacked all my graphics file associations early on in my computer setup. Here's what I did - on the "Advanced" tab for the file associations, I created a new "command" (preview), pasted in the above to the Application line, then set "preview" to default. Now, when I double click a graphics file it shows it to me with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, but I can still right click and have it open with the graphics program of my choice.

Best of all, I changed the BMP extension first, and I think maybe the GIF extension, only to find with great pleasure that all the JPEG and TIFF extension variants automatically changed as well, with the "open" still set to whatever program that hijacked them (fine, as I'm still debating what to use for a graphics editor, and will fix when I've decided) but with my new "preview" command firmly in place using Windows Viewer and set as the default. I was so stunned I almost fell off my chair, this accommodating behaviour is most unlike Windows...

I think I'd better buy Leo a Latte!!!

Thanks!

When I did this for some reason the icon for Windows Picture & Fax Viewer has changed to the white icon with cogs in it. When I go into file associations and change a file type to open with WP&FV all the pictures on my computer have this con. Is there some way I can get back the original WP&FV icon. I tried the above fix: regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
and it said successful, but it hasnt solved my problem. Your assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, I was trying to do the same thing as several other people in this forum, add Windows picture and fax viewer to other OLE type objects as a default action after customising my right-click menus.

One thing I'd like to add is that if you encase the %1 in double quotes ("%1") then for some reason it fails to work. This is a usual habit of mine, since putting " " around %1 is usually good practice to handle spaces in filenames. However here it seems to break it. Not having the " " doesn’t seem to be a problem... it handles spaces just fine without it.

Thanks Leo for this forum, it helped me realise what I was doing wrong with the syntax. I knew I was on the right track because it had worked for other people.
