My internet explorer has opened the past couple of weeks with add on disabled. When I open Tools, all of the add-ons show they are enabled and I am not able to re enable it. When I click on an add-on, I get a notation that I have approved this add-on for the following sites - inside the white box there is only an asterick and I am not able to click on "Allow on all sites" (button is faded). What else can I do?

I disabled both Adobe add-ons, but can still print pdf files.
Also tried "start, all programs, accessories, system tools, Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)" method. Can still print pdf files.
What else is needed to disable Adobe Reader?

Only method I know of - is to remove Adobe Reader from computer.
It seems that Adobe Reader changes IE (eg. IE menu items); even if add-ons are disabled, if IE finds Adobe Reader app in computer, it will utilize it.

I reread your quest for help and decided you are looking for a file named "extoff" but the directions did not say look for a file, it simply said to erase the "extoff" letters at the end of the file name. Simply right click on the IE icon in the start menu then click properties, when that is accomplished click on the tab named "shortcut". About 2 inches down from there you should see a highlighted area which will be the "target" area. In that area will be the name of the IE file location name. At the end of the file location name is the letters "extoff" just erase those letters at the end of that file name and then follow my other instructions above 1-5. Hope this was clear enough for you.

Another thing is Fire Fox could be one of the problems while using IE. One more thing once you have done steps 1 through 5, go into tools on your main tool bar and click toolbars and select the bars you want back on your computer and whatever else you are missing. Hope this helped!

I was having the same problem with add-ons greyed out, but I found the solution now, after I did a file search for 'iexplore.exe', when I found it I opened it from the enclosing folder and it worked so I added it back to the start menu and also to the desktop.

Hope this helps

I am having the same problem as several people above. Internet Explorer 7.0 starts up with a little bar at the top that says "Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled" When I go to Tools and Options, and attempt to enable the add-ons, nothing seems to change and I still have the message. I followed all the procedures for enableing add-ons.
Thanks,

Hello,
Trying to find out how new add-ons are installed and where they need to be stored on disk? I'm trying to have explorer recognize this add-on on a friends laptop:

Name File
Web Browser Applet Control msjava.dll

I located this file under c:\windows\system32 on my machine. He saved the msjava file in the same place on his laptop and rebooted. Explorer does not see this add-on. We are both running XP SP2. How are add-ons installed, and seen by explorer? Thanks.

I have the same comment regarding Adobe Acrobat, I cannot change the disabled setting... However, in this case, I am the administrator and I don't believe there are any other user names on this computer.

Recently, I disabled 6 questionable add-ons to cure an ugly popup problem. It worked. This was a hit and miss, try anything approach. Unlike TaskBar processes, I can not google the names of add-ons (or their filenames) because I get page after page of meaningless HiJack logs. Even a not symbol (-) doesn't work. Yes, I tried lavasoft, spybot, etc., but they did not resolve the issue. What I'd like to find is a list of published add-ons and their known purpose. Even if bad guys re-use a name, this is a start !! Thanks for your consideration. Great web site !!
