Mike, somewhere in here, said it well. It seems that way too much of my time and money is spent on utility software rather than the work and enjoyment that a computer can bring. That being said, I have tried a few registry cleaners and find little benefit from using them. When I do need to clean all remnants of a program out, I have to do it manually via regedit, search for the keyword, delete, F3 until done. Sometimes that is the ONLY way I've been able to reload a program that has stopped working correctly. This is probably the 1% that Leo refers to. To Leo, I value your opinion. Thanks for what you offer.

After doing research on registry cleaners I have found that most of them are the same! That's right, I forget the associations right now but regfix, errorsmart, registrysmart, errorkiller, regsweep, and a few others are all the same program by the same company with the same website template with the same testimonials with the same LACK OF SUPPORT. That doesn't sound like reliable software to me.

The best registry cleaner is not using an OS that needs a registry. The best registry cleaner is Linux :)

The best is none. I have been doing computer support for 30 years. I'm really good at what I do. Listen to this logic...
Go to the suggested free Registry Cleaner's webpage ... Look for the explanation of Blacklist ... It tells you all the the problems that the Fixes have repaired... If you had any of these programs installed.. you would have had the described problem...
Trust me... the gains of unnecessarily running a Registry Cleaner are tiny compared to the dangers of running it... I commend the people that wrote the program on a great effort to put out fixes... And I commend Leo on the effort it takes to provide this service. This is only my opinion ... just information to consider... new here and certainly not trying to offend anyone :)

Searched for the best registry tools for a while...

First I would like to tell that there is crowd of windows repair programs available on the market today, free and shareware. But the truth is most of them are dangerous to your PC and can bug it even more. I've used many of it, mostly free ones. And then did complete re-install of Windows since it was locked completely. So my final solution is to use 2-4 programs that proved themselves in most cases. Here is my list of registry cleaners:

#1 RegistryEasy
#2 RegistryCure
#3 RegistryMechanic
#4 RegSWEEP

First 2 programs available at http://repair.repairandsecure.com
.
And you can find other 2 at Download.com do not wish to post multiple links here.

Cheers,

Thanks for an excellent article Leo.

The people who say that is essential to use a registry cleaner are clueless - it is not essential.

Another point, most of the cooments with links to download registry cleaners or to review sites have been made by affiliates of the programs they suggest and they make money from sales of them. So their opinion is worthless as they are just trying to make money.

Having used practially every registry cleaner written for Windows I can honestly say that more that 99% of registry cleaners identify at least some valid registry entries as being bad, and deleting these entries can and often does cause problems with the worst case scenario being that Windows will no longer start.

For people who do feel the need to mess with their registry I recommend TuneUp Utilities 2009 as it very safe and the trial version is fully functional, unlike many registry cleaners.

CCleaner and Argente Registry Cleaner are the only free registry cleaners which are safe to use, however on occasion the deletion of empty software keys can cause problems and a restore will be needed.

Leo's (Opinion) is very wrong!

You need a registry cleaner to uninstall old data from programs that did not fully install, erase invalid settings and keys.

The health of your registry is critical to the total health of your PC.

Many, Many programs you no longer have on your PC currently might still exist and have registry keys in your Registry File.

So people please invest in a good registry cleaner to keep your machine from stressing you out and running invalid keys.

Pointer : You can make registrybackup files by typing regedit in your run button box located on start menu. Choose file export from the registry window with the My Computer (top of list) selected. Save the export file (regbackup01.reg) in a folder (registry back up).

To restore your registry back to its old version just double click on your back up file.

I disagree.

Specifically "The health of your registry is critical to the total health of your PC" is much too broad a statement. Having a lot of old data left in the registry does not make for an "unhealthy registry" or an unhealthy machine. The impact is typically minimal, and not worth the risk of an over-aggressive registry cleaning.

Yes, there are absolutely things that can happen in the registry that can adversely impact your machine's performance. But that's quite different than the oft-repeated "there's stuff left over in your registry". The later is, again, benign 99% of the time.

Registry cleaners are an appropriate tool for those who know what they're doing - perhaps even GeekSquad members - but they're not something I recommend for the average user, except as the article calls out, as a last resort.

One other thing: "To restore your registry back to its old version just double click on your back up file." - that assumes your machine still boots. In the scenarios I hear about quite often it does not, and recovery isn't nearly that simple.

This article is 100% bullcrap! The auther tells you the best registry cleaner is no registry cleaner at all because he fails at understanding how the Registry works. Any free or old programs you might have installed, licences, keyboard, mouse operations, tracking programs, and may other things that hinder your PC experiene exist in the registry. You must clean it and keep it compact. Anyone who does not or says you dont (Leo) is a complete moron!

Calling me a moron doesn't really help make your point.

I stand by what I said, moron or not. 99% of the crap that does end up in the registry is totally benign, and most of the time doesn't impact performance in any appreciable way. There's simply no need to clean it out.

What you don't see are the people who've totally hosed their system by running a registry cleaner that "cleaned too much". I see that. Often.

Unless you know what you're doing (see my response to the next comment), in my opinion registry cleaners are simply not necessary 99% of the time.

Again everyone has their own tastes and I with mine have to disagree with Leo. I think Registry Cleaners are a vital part of our computer's lives. When the aforementioned annoying problems persist it tends to reflect upon a heavily damaged, poorly kempt Windows Registry. By utilizing todays registry technology computers can recieve their regular maintenance easily by their owners. Not some overpayed geek. Theres a ton of registry programs out there and the wrong one can do more harm then good. But with the right one your computer can continue to run as new. There is freeware type programs available but if a vital mistake is made there is no support team to help. Sometimes even no backup options. Leave something as important as your computer registry not to chance. Click here To see my review page of today's top Registry Cleaners.

Needless to say, I disagree, but the "other side" is always worth considering when making decisions. Thanks for your thoughts.

REGISTRY REPAIR >>> PERFORMANCE
Best registry repair is a "clean/fresh install"
of the systen software with latest drivers.
TIPS:
_clean install XP, then do repair install
(this rearranges the xp loading.. seems improved)
_install drivers before XP SP2 if possible.
_XP SP3 after a clean install seems to improve
performance: memory management, filekeeping,
and fragmentation
_defragment: boot defragment and XP defrag
at startup (UltraDefrag boot works for me,
but in OS it requires shutdown of security suite)
Registry repair after clean install really slows
performance and causes video "glitches".
My choices for registry repair have been:
1. Advanced System Optimizer (ASO), SysTweak
2. Registry Mechanic, iolo
3. Glary Utilities (free).
I agree and do not use registry repair except
as a temporary patch and tnen only one element at a time with restore points.

But now for 4 years I've been using them and never had to take my 1st & 2nd computer to the shop I save $65 a year. As I now fix other people computers a Registry Cleaner will not speed up your allready clogged computer and I do not know why you must clean it every week to keep it at optimum speed.

When we take into account the billions that are spent every year by computer users alone, including hardware and software, it begs the question: why are we al still scratching around on websites, going from Billy to Jack, endeavouring to find the golden fleece, i. e. a program or utility that will reliably clean our machines so that all the dross is removed and we can use them again in much the same state as when we bought them as new. Is that too much to ask?I believe there must be millions of angry and dissapointed customers out there who are totaly frustrated with their computers and a lot of them give up as it becomes obvious that there is no real governing body which will fight their cause for them!

I think I have to agree with Leo about Registry cleaners. I had a Gateway 2000 with DSL form ATT. Well I needed to uninstall norton and when I went to reinstall I did not have enough memory because they had upped their requirements. Using registry on that machine did not help. Privacy Guardian even slowed it further. So, I obtained a Dell Dimension 4300 that had been in office use. It was stripped. I loaded it and then norton still would not work. so I purchased PCTools Internet Security which has anti-spyware, anti-virus, firewall, and spam protection. I cannot get the firewall to install, so I am waiting on tech support, which is not so great. As a bonus I was given Desktop Maestro which is a combination of Registry Mechanic and Privacy Guardian. That slowed my machine, froze it, gave me blank screens and I just uninstalled and am requesting a refund. I have been all over the web looking at all the reviews written and no one agrees. RegCure found the most errors, but how do you know if correcting them will really make your machine run better? I find this very frustrating. I don't even know if I have a back-up. So I will not be purchasing any registry cleaner, because I am afraid of what has been done and might be done even on the newbie club I was not convinced. Thanks Lou.

Dear Leo,

I dont agree with you when you overlook the importance of registry cleaner. There is no question that a problem can be caused by invalid references in registry, which can cause multiple problems such as pc crash, slow performance etc. Now one needs to find & remove those invalid references. Finding them manually & repairing can be a duanting task. Here, comes the role of a windows registry cleaner. So my vote will go with those software. Sorry Leo about not agreeing with you.

There are plenty of windows registry cleaner in market. but the best one for me is RegBooster(http://www.regbooster.com)

The plus points of the software are:
- easy to use.
- quick scanning to find errors & repairing them.
- ignore list(does not find/count that entry as an error on next search)
- registry defragmentation
- registry backup
- manage startup
- excellent look & feel.

You can download it from:

I agree with you, that you do not need to clean the registry. I disagree that cleaning the registry speeds up the OS; I don't believe, from my studies, that it speeds up the OS. I do use JV16 and clean my registry a few times a year. I experiment with new programs. But each year, on new years day, I do a clean install of my OS. Each year I have a new, nimble OS. Each year I clean my registry less and less, so the few times are fewer each year.
My advice, if you use your computer for e-mail and sane, safe surfing, you do not need to clean your registry. You might want to do a clean install each year. Before you do though download any new versions of your programs and burn them to cds or dvds, and put your security program setups on the first one. Backup you personal files. Then you reinstall the OS. You will have for the year, if you clean out junk files and defrag regularly, a frisky OS.

Dear Leo
The problem with maintenance programs is that the user needs to UNDERSTAND what he is doing. That's where the non-computer geek falls down. Having said that I use and recommend the following programs as being- in my experience- fool-proof even for the simplest of HOME users.
1. "Windows Advanced care V2 personal" from IOBIT.com - a Registry cleaner.
2. DEFRAG programs. Definitely a must. The Windows one is OK, though I've just starting using Auslogics. On helping various people. sometimes the Defrag procedure can take over 10 hours, their machine is so poor maintained.
3. Anti-virus. Avast! is great. I removed a paid-for Norton some years ago, and have been happier ever since. As for Mcafee, please don't mention its name near me, I'm liable to spit. If anyone gets into trouble when uninstalling Mcafee, there is a complicated procedure to follow. Let me know if you want it. However, the 2 routes entail knowledge of getting into system files, or the Registry. Not exactly for the 'average' user.
As for reformatting, I have not done it for some years. My regular almost daily maintenance program procedure seems to have resolved that necessity.
because of the time involved, I perform the IOBIT once a day, the others about once a week. Depends on my morning coffee and home exercise schedule.
Just yesterday, while on the beach at Nahariya, Israel, friends of mine recommended NOD anti-virus. I haven't tried it, but really, avast is so automatic, it is fantastic. As an aside, my daughter complained of viruses. I installed Avast, did a run- it found 34,000 files, each of approximately 29 Kb !!!! Avast removed them all. She had a Mcafee installed which found about half- I did not complete the run, since as soon as I found that there were some it could not treat, I stopped the Mcafee run. Ugghh!
I love your newsletter

I have been using this software for some time now and I can honestly say that I have been pleased with it from the get go. Although, since I don't know what cleaner you are currently using I can not completely say that it is better or worse, but I can say that I have had a very good experience with this software(Registry Repair).

A commuters life? Do you travel much? OK never mind. I just wanted to jump in as it was and say that I agree with what you have said. The beginning of a computers life requires no cleaning at all. But after about a year or two I can't imagine how my system managed to run with all of the crap it had accumulated. Nothing like registry cleaner to the rescue. I see that you use StompSoft's Registry Repair. Is it really good? I've been looking for a something better than the reg cleaner that I've got now.

I say this because we all know that every little bit of free space we reclaim on our computers after a certain period of time is inevitably good. :)

There are many valid points for regular registry cleaning. By regular, I don't mean every day but more like once a week or so.

If your system's registry is filled with invalid file path references (pointers to non-existing files or folders) your computer can easily slow down with a noticeable difference.

This is because trying to access a file or folder that doesn't exist is quite slow. One such access doesn't take even a second, but if your registry has hundreds of these stored the delay can be many seconds. Usually the delay is shown when the computer starts up, or also in general usage.

Other reason, at least for me, to use a registry cleaner is the fact it can clear all my mru data from the registry. Mru data means the most recently used lists of many application, such as Windows media player, Winamp etc. Storing this kind of data in the registry could be seen as a threat of privacy, at least I do.

Good registry cleaners can also compact the registry, it means the size of the registry storage files are reduced without removing any data from them. It's a bit like defrag, the unused blocks of data are removed from the registry storage files and thus the files become smaller. And the smaller the files are, the faster they load to memory on system startup.

A good registry cleaner can also uninstall unused shared components and other such system modules which are only taking up space from your system.

I'm a happy customer of jv16 PowerTools myself, the quality of the software is far superior to its competitors (who focus on making their software look like candy rather than making the software work). Also, Macecraft is one of the rare software developers who listen to their customers and users, they regularily ask for users for their opinions on development, what features should be added and developed, they publish a list of known bugs, they answer to your bug reports and suggestions etc etc.

Re-downloaded jv16PT and then wrote (3 or 4 times) for my registration code. As of this date have not received an acknowledgement of any one of them!
Beacuse of this, would recommend using another reg program.

I agree 100 % with what Leo said/wrote, in fact, I too often stress this on forums where I participate. It's all very simple: these so-called "registry cleaners" are rather useless pieces of software that can be even quite dangerous under certain circumstances (especially for the not-so-computing-savvy users); if anyone maybe wants to, please check out the entry on my own home-site's "articles.html" page titled "THE REGISTRY-CLEANING SOFTWARE MYTH DEBUNKED": http://tadej-ivan.50webs.com/articles.html, or optionally read the Ed Bott's "Why I don't use registry cleaners" article/blog-entry: http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000643.html (my own comments are posted as/by "Ivan Tadej")

In general, these various "orphaned" keys/entrys/values surely make registry hive-files (and their respective backups) unnecessarily bigger, but the size of the registry-files itself certainly doesn't degrade the computer's performance; in other words it doesn't impact the speed of registry operations (and therefore overall computer's speed) nomather how many of them were left after some program was un-installed, or how "deep" the respective key/entry/value resides in the registry structure. It is so simply because the registry is demand-paged, but also registry operations like queries (searching), reads and writes are not linear.

However, there is one exception (as always): I use a Registry First Aid program: http://www.RoseCitySoftware.com/Reg1Aid from RoseCitySoftware site that is rather a "registry maintainer". The thing is that it doesn't clean the registry automatically (like most of "registry cleaners" do) but it offers users to browse invalid entries found, and then you need to choose which ones to fix and how to fix them (although it makes a "suggestion"); btw. this was especially useful when I changed the "ProgramFiles" and "CommonFiles" variables with MS's TweakUI back then, because it simply fixed all that for me instead of doing it manually with Regedit that would be totally time-consuming.

Namely it offers these options after the completed scan:

"Fix entry" (to the suggested value or the one that you choose manually)
"Leave entry without change" (no further explanation needed)
"Delete entry" (no further explanation needed)
"Cut Invalid Substring" (for more complicated values, i.e values with more than one path etc.)

Well, there is one thing that could improve your computer's performance (and is a registry related thing), i.e. it's the "compacting" of physical registry files on hard-disk. You could do this with a Ntregopt: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm, a program similar to PageDefrag from Sysinternals (which defrags pagefile and .evt files), although this one optimizes only registry hives (i.e. it recreates registry hives from "scratch", thus removing slack space left from modified or deleted keys), and doesn't touch pagefile at all; again, for more details see my home-site, the "14.3.2005" entry on page "events1.html": http://tadej-ivan.50webs.com/other/events1.html.

--

best regards,
