I ran the script and it worked fine until I rebooted the computer and the taskbar goes back to the same. I re-run the script and all is well. Somehow the settings are getting changed when I reboot. What is happening?

Thank you so much for your solution! It worked. My problem solved. But, it erase the Microsoft Office shortcut bar in the upper side of the screen. And I must reconfigure it in Microsoft Office Setting program.

Oh,yeah, before I forgot, for NATE who posted about Kelly's corner tweak page and encountered with "a compression problem". I have the solution. This problem occurred when your browser unable to extract some compressed sites. Mozilla Firefox and Netscape have this problem. The solution is change your browser! To Opera or Internet Explorer which both support extraction process, and reenter the site. I hope this info useful.

Leo, awesome advice. I'm stumped as to why this isn't working when it hasn't in the past. Only one program doesn't minimize to the taskbar - WordPerfect. IF I Alt-Tab it once I can minimize and recover thereafter. I downloaded and ran the tool but it didn't help. Any other ideas?

Unfortunately "a compression problem" doesn't tell me anything. I'd need more details like specific error messages to even try to be of any help.

Spent all morning trying to get the program tabs to reappear on the XP task bar, to no avail. Microsoft's site completely, utterly, totally and 100% useless, as always.

As recommended by Leo, Kelly's Korner Tweak #240 solved the problem in 20 seconds flat, and that includes downloading the file. Fantastic! Many thanks for the heads up.

if you are having problems with accessing the tweaks page, try opening the link in new window (right click on "Tweaks" and select "Open Link in New Window".

I had the problem where tasks would disappear from the taskbar, but still appear in the Alt-TAB list. The tweak doesn't work for me, and all it does is reset my taskbar + quicklaunch settings, so I have to go through and reconfigure them again. User beware!

For those who get an error when running the progra, I had the same thing happen to me. I looked elsewhere and this worked in the end:

"Here is a way to do it:
1. Save registry file (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restoretaskbar.reg)
2. Double click on the saved file. It will ask you if you want to enter this information to the registry. DO NOT CLICK OK YET. Leave it there.
3. Kill explorer.exe. To do it open the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and on the processes tab, click on explorer.exe and then click the button "end process"
4. Now that the desktop icons and the taskbar disappears, click the ok button for the registry
5. From the task manager, click menu file->new task, and enter "explorer.exe" and ok."

One of our computers at work had this problem. The employees would just keep launching programs (not knowing that they were already running - as they don't appear in the taskbar). I'd hit Alt-Tab to see dozens of applications open. You're solution at Kelly's Korner fixed it all though.
(I think the problem might be caused by a google or yahoo toolbar conflict - Both toolbars were installed on the computer and one tried inserting a search field in the task menu. You can't really tell it's there until you tweak the toolbar a bit).

quick launch icons will not stay locked, after reboot taskbar is blank tried lots of fixes but to no avail.The right side tray is fine clock progs etc this is just quick launch I have to manually unlock enable quick launch then lock every time.

I am so grateful for your page!! I've been hit with this problem twice in 1 week! First, when I was trouble-shooting my aunt's laptop a few days ago, at the end, due to some worm I couldn't remove using all the resources I found via google, I had to format the harddrive to start over. Well, the turnaround propossed for the taskbar problem seems to work 4 a lot of people but I had the problem, downloaded the VBS file suggested but it didn't work: it shows an error message with the following data:

Thanks so much, Leo, for this fix! Unfortunately, the folks at Microsoft should realize that when you allow the other parts of the taskbar to be resized at will that there's a way for people and programs to inadvertantly make their "running programs" section of the taskbar effectively a size of zero. Simply making this yet another toolbar and treating it like all the rest of them (ie you can turn it on or off with a menu click) would seem to me to be a more simple and straightforward design than requiring an obscure registry tweak to fix it. Nonetheless you and Kelly have come forth with a quick and easy way to make the change, though finding it took me considerably longer!!!

Thanks Leo, I have the same problem - my running programs disappear from taskbar. But only at 1 profile on my PC. That happens, after instalation SP3 of WinOnCD6 PowerPack burning program by Roxio and simultanous updating burning program Nero 7 Premium programs to the version 7.0.8.2. But your advice is excelent and does work well. Thank you very much :-)
Unfortunately Microsoft was not able tell me why that accident happens, but I guess that there was some conflict between some drivers need for burning ...

I got the same problem so I was brought to this site thru googling.
The script didn't work in my computer and I couldn't figure out why.
There was no instruction too in Kelly's corner on how to make them work if, after double-clickinig the script, a pop-up notification would read "THERE IS NO SCRIPT ENGINE FOR FILE EXTENSION ".VBS."
I envied those guys who made positive comments about the tweek. I again did the googling thing and learned that if the *.vbs won't work, we have to rename the file exntension from *.vbs to *.vbe.
And WOW!!! The problem has been fixed! And to those who are about to encounter the same problem about the tweek, hope this post would help!

Finally, A BIG THANKS to you Leo, and of course, to Kelly's corner. You guys are among the "HEROES in the web." I will surely recommend your sites and bookmark them. Again, thanks and regards!!!

Ouch...my Tablet PC running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition started showing the same symptoms...but after downloading the patch via laptop, and transfer to tablet, the fix worked perfectly after some readjustment of the start bar. Thank you very much! It was a pain using a TABLET with no keyboard and no minimized program list. Thanks!
