Hi,

I have a relatively new hp desktop computer and i have never had any problems with the usb ports and have used a 32mb lexar media jump drive for a few months. recently i bought a 4gb sandisk usb drive and the computer wont recognise it fully. it will make the beep sound when it is plugged in just the same as the lexar media drive, but i cant seem to find it anywhere else. it is not in any of the drives(I,J,H,etc...). please, is there somewhere i am forgetting to look?

I have read the article on the top of the page.
Leo, I have the same problem as the ""Suben" Dated February 29,2008" A recap of his problem is below. I have completely updated Windows XP Pro. I have updated and use all the spyware and virus software. I have delete my USB from the Device Manager then restarted my computer and I still get the ballon stating my USB is not recognized. My Mouse is USB and my printer is USB and both work just fine. Have not had a problem with them at all. But, when I plug in my USB HUB, flash drive, or IPOD it will not recognize any of them. I have plugged all three devices into another computer and they work fine. Can you help!!

Our computer has never given us any problems with our USB Hub but one day it did. It couldn't recognise any Flashdrives and indentified them as Unknown. I thought it was a virus but I have done a vrus scan throughout the whole computer with Trend Micro. The message from the computer says there has been a Malfunction with the USB. I can't remember the full message. it was in a yellow balloon. I run Windows XP Home. I used Norton Ghost to upload a previous ghost image and yet the problem is still there. This prooves it isn't a virus. The computer is about 2 years old and the USB Hubs shouldn't malfunction or shouldn't stop working.

I have read the article on the top of the page.

The rest of the information was copied because I was typing this on another site but I had to register to post this.

I am so frustrated. I have read every article on USB problems and called Western Digital and still my problem is not fixed. I tried uninstall all the USB entries on device manager. When I try to do so, my computer gets stuck and I have to force a shut down. When I plug in my WD Passport external hard drive, Windows XP does not recognize it. when i click on the device on device manager, it is called "unknown device" and under the device status it says "no drivers are installed for this device. This external hard drive worked perfectly when i first bought it a couple months ago. I saved all my files from one computer and then opened up the drive on another computer and everything was properly saved and everything was fine. Now--- I cant open anything anymore. Help please... should I just call it a day and assume that all my files are lost?

I have 3 USB 2.0 ports on my system, I don't know what happened but now they are all being read as USB 1.0 (i get the message that says that my device could run faster if i used USB 2.0). I have automatic update turned on so my windows should be up to date. My USB drivers may be old though...also when i went to check the driver version in device manager it shows 4 USB universal host controllers ("Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USBUniversal Host Controller-2658/2659/265A/265B") and 4 usb root hubs ("USB Root Hub")...the appearance of 4 of each confused me...any help with this or a place where i can download new drivers would be helpful

I recently purchased what is supposedly an Apple MPG player from a friend. The player already has files on it (MPGs) that will play when earphones are attached.
However, the player is completely filled, but I can not access the files to remove any of them. When plugged into my USB port, the unit charges fine, but the computer does not recognize the player. The port works fine (the player doesn't show on any of my friend's computers either. When I checked the paperwork, I found that: "This difital player is not a mass storage device, your PC will not make a data connection with the player. The USB plug is only intended for external power to conserve the battery"
Is there some way to reach these files & delete them? I guess what I'm asking is, "Can this player be turned into a 'mass storage device'?

I have Windows XP Media SP2 and I have an external hard drive (Beyond Micro, not sure of the model) and I plugged it in, it worked fine and I was using it as i saw fit. Yesterday, for reasons I am unsure of, it suddenly stopped working. At the time it failed, I had a download going to it, which I do often, but it suddenly said access was denied and I assumed it meant I was not allowed to use the site, which I found strange. I later noticed I couldn't access the drive. My computer still makes a noise when I turn it on or plug it in and I can see it in the Device Manager, but it doesn't let me access the data on it, almost as if it doesn't exist. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but that didn't do me any good. I am now leaving it off and unplugged for a while to see if that helps, but in the mean time, do you have any idea what would prompt it to suddenly give up? Everything is completely up to date, but the device was working before so I don't believe that's part of the issue. Thanks a lot.

>>>My husband's gateway laptop has three USB ports on the side which are all spotty in recognizing the device attached. For attachments (e.g., wireless mouse) that light when activated, the light being on is spotty in the same way. Is this probably a hardware issue?

Same problem here with my Gateway 3520GZ laptop I believe is an Hardware issue but I'm not sure.

In my case one port don't work at all, the other works fine and the last only work as USB 1.1 port.

Please can sombody help us to fix or realize what's going on here??

Have followed the prompts through "help", tells me the device is working properly and that no driver is installed, but when I try to load a driver it can not be completed and then that a driver is not needed!!
Went to system configuration utility in help and "Plug and Play" is ticked and "running", but "Universal Plug and Play" is "stopped", tried to turn it on, but it won't be turned on. Getting very nervous now, cos I'm at the limit of my understanding and knowledge. We are using Windows XP home edition.

I had no idea USB devices create such distress! I tried reading all the related comments but my problem seems slightly different. My SanDisk M250 MP3 player works on my business laptop (so I know the unit is operational) but not my home desktop. However, all other USB devices work perfectly on the desktop: keyboard, mouse, webcam, printer, removable drives, etc. When I plug in the MP3 player, a get a dialog bubble that the system has recognized a new device, but it doesn't show up in My Computer, Device Manager, Disk Manager, and the Remove device safely icon disappears almost immediately. How can so many other USB devices (some quite old) work but not this modern, new device? I contacted SanDisk tech support but they were baffled. They do not make a specific driver for that product.

Any advice? Thanks!

A question and a comment ...
Is there a limit to how many USB ports my desktop computer can have? I have four USB 1.1 ports and I see that there are internal cards I can install that offer 4 or 5 USB 2.0 ports.

My comment: Manufacturers aren't always telling us when USB 2.0 ports are necessary. Also, they don't make it clear when port expanders are lousy. My Dell Axim was barely functional on a USB port connected to my monitor, or when my USB backup drive is attached. Likewise for my Iomega Floppy Plus.
