Windows Vista Goes Gold

The code for Windows Vista was released to manufacturing on November 8, Jim Allchin, the co-president of Microsoft's platforms and services division, has just announced in a media teleconference.

The team had signed off on the final code at around 10am PT November 8, Allchin said, confirming that Vista will be made available to its volume license customers on November 30 and to consumers on January 30, 2007.

"This is a good day. Vista is rock solid and we are ready to ship. This is a significant milestone for Microsoft and our partners. The RTM signifies the next phase for Windows Vista: our development work is done and now the progress begins for the PC and device manufacturers and software developers to finalize the work on their products and applications," he said.

All the Vista SKU's will be available on a single DVD for the first time, and the product will be available in 5 languages at release, which is two more than when Windows XP was launched five years ago.

"The French, Spanish and Japanese versions were, in fact, signed off before English. That is a first for us. The product will also be available in 18 languages by the January release time, with more than a hundred language versions released eventually," he said.

Microsoft would also have 50 percent more device driver support at release than XP ever had, Allchin said, adding that he was proud of what the team had achieved with the product, particularly on the security front.

Allchin reconfirmed that he will be leaving the software giant at the end of January, at which time he will be replaced by Steve Sinofsky, who has headed the Office team until now, and who will then lead the Windows and Windows Live groups, with broad responsibility for planning future versions of Windows.

eWeek Labs has also posted a blog item on Vista's RTM, as well as a slideshow that walks you through the new operating system.

Liar liar :

You can tell he is lying. He said it is "Rock Solid".

Neil :

Hey... Mr. "Anonymous" how do know that it is NOT rock solid ??
Do you have a copy of the RTM version of Vista ?
I don't think so ! So how the hell can you make a statement like that !
People like you are the ones that still believe that "the earth is flat" !

fdsf :

Actually yes I do have a legit copy of Vista RTM :)

sdfds :

Do the math if you cannot figure out how I have it :)

dfdsf :

"JIM ALLCHIN, outgoing co-President of the Platform Products and Services Group at Microsoft, has suggested that Windows Vista is so secure it may not need an antivirus system."

This is why he is "outgoing". Its crackheads like him in the managerial structure of MSFT that is why we ship shit.

Neil :

I am not a techead so I don't know.
But one thing I do know your the "liar Liar" around here, why else would you need so may "alias's" ?
Just another MS basher hey ?? !!
With an atitude like yours you wouldn't be working for MS for long.
It is east to see which side of the fence your on.

dsfds :

You are absolutely right mr know it all.. *wink wink*

Basher? It is called being a critic.

Daemon :

Let's just wait and see! :) I'm sure even though not all of us will benefit from it there's a chance that it could lift the computing industry- somehow.

Cheers!

SPENGLER :

I don't know about you all, but Vista RC2 took a little while to boot on my system, ran in only 14GB, occupied only 450MB RAM, and with it's new Window Manager or whatever they call it...KICKED ASS on this laptop. It's by far the fastest front end OS MS has put out since probably 2000. The only complaints I had in the whole use where two things:sometimes it would forget my profile to the point of desktop items missing, Symantec wouldn't load, and ThunderBird couldn't find my emails (reboot usually fixed this)That crazy paranoid User Control Centre thingy that locks your system and asks permission to do mundain things. (easily disabled in Windows Security Centre)Bottom line, I can't wait until the end of the month when my company gets final versions & keys from MSDN.

I thank you MS for a pretty slick product. and BTW to MS bashers out there, I don't disagree, and I too "bash" M$, but only when it's truly deserved. Could you make something better and/or more powerful for less? I think not.

SPENGLER :

and a product like Windows ME truly deserved it. that was seriously the worst thing i've seen come out for computers since ... well, since viruses first appeared.

Karamvir Singh Rajpal :

Hello Microsoft and Windows Vista team members this is your old friend "Karamvir". Finally Vista is released to RTM. The performance was awosome and mindblowing. But the shell still has older icons like "XP's Help and Support Center" is present in "MOBILITY CENTER". Plus the "Turn Off Button" is much different as shown in the login screen. Also "WMP 11" has new icon which is not attarctive as of "WMP 10". Plus there are minor annoyances and limitations. For more information , visit "extremetech.com". Very soon I am going to write the complete picture and brief description of the "Windows Vista RTM" in the Chriss Prillo's website.

One need not be a MS basher to make a statement that Vista is not rock solid. Since you claim not to be a techhead then allow me to share why this statement is true. First we have heard these words from MS many times before only to find out a few days later that problem X has come to surface. Second there just isn't a rock solid OS. It doesnt exist true some are better than other but none that I am aware of do not have some underlying problems Pick any OS you like and there will be a technical support section somewhere. And technical support sites only show up when there is a problem.
My employer gained access to Vista RTM on 11/10/2006 we went to our test lab and ran an upgrade from Windows XP SP2 to Vista and while the upgrade did work it brought the overly powerful machine to virtually complete halt. We then wiped the hard drive and performed a clean install and we had no further problems (lack a couple of software and driver issues). So as you can see rock solid would not be an appropriate claim to use.

I can understand what you say, it's just that some people are knocking Vista for the sake of knocking it ! Or prefer MAC or Linux and want to put Windows down !
What do people expect from several millions of lines of coding, of course there are going to some cliches.
I just don't like it when people put Vista down for sake of doing it, that's all !
For example Windows Me was a real shocker and I went straight back to 98 SE. But lets see how Vista turns out... give it a chance... don't knock before they even get started.

Anime :

I agree, Don't knock before it gets out the door good. I have used Vista (all copies)since distribution. I tell you this. I like it much better than XP (all versions). When I upd graded to XP, everything was broke. No drivers worked at all. Software makers were slow at getting the drivers up on the net. With Vista....no problems. I had one or two drivers at the most that didn't work, those were easily obtainable because the manufactors had them up. What helped vista was the releasing to the public. Now for a quickie on Linux....Hate it. It reminds me of windows 3.1. And how many years ago did win 3.1 come out? Open source/underground? stay there, they are not ready (and will prob. never be) main stream. I would use Mac before Linux, but Microsoft is my choice of OP system.

ya think :

most of the post here sound like people whom are bored with there older operating system
I have yet to see any break through technologies
by micro soft (please show me I would like to know where on vista)
there no proof of performance ....I laugh at secure
there is no such thing look at xp and how that was suppose to
same OLD market tricks show on this O.S as every other one MS has released
xp is good because of the core it uses ...it wasn't built over night
and when 95 was out and so many others were tiring to get NT to run, only then did some one in MS get interested in that there was money to be made
at best said xp is a nt upgraded to be more friendly
MS is also showing your right to listen by drm
by supporting the billion dollar record company's
who also SELL music on mp3 format (why don't they have to pay for it ?-point is you cant download music with out having legally but yet record company's don't have to pay for mp3 format technologies - are you saving money when you download ....where does the money go for the material savings on time and people who work for the company's pressing cds?
your eclectic your internet fees ....gas goes up on a IF OR and MAYBE and or bush farts on tv then every one complains

and your supporting this by paying for a operating system that a has good chance of recreating the ME System mistake ...lol

ps: ac97 audio was not supported on rc1 no generic driver
why pay for new hardware that isn't even old yet ?

mfg :

HI to you all hard working staff at Microsoft.

I hope some one person will have the balls to pass this on to a senior member of staff and maybe it might even get to Bill Gates ( wishful thinking ).

our Business has been using windows for well over ten years
and in all this time I was hoping and wishing the mighty windows (birth child of the richest man on the planet) experience would only get better and better!
Boy was I wrong...

I have now come to the realization that all that code copy and pasting has finally caught up with the operating system and as computers get more powerful windows is getting slower and slower and bigger and bigger.
Even the new VISTA needs a good kick in the software ass to make it work fast enough to run most applications.
So to you I will say my good byes here and now before all the Pc computers we use get exchanged for Macs
here is a thought for you to ponder.

"I am but the start of it"

farewell forever Windows anything!

AJ :

To mfg...you have got be kidding me. All I have to say is "Have fun"

If you can't make Vista perform well on any hardware that has been released in the last 3 years with at least 512MB of memory in it, then you are either running a VERY old build or have no idea what you're doing. Yes, Vista is slower than XP on older hardware, but not by much. What do you expect when you add more GUI features? To say that windows is getting "slower and slower" is ludicrus. Windows has NOT gotten any slower over the years, unless of course you're running ancient hardware. XP was the fastest version of Windows to date and 2000 was nothing to complain about either.

As for your switch to Macs, it brought a smile to my face. I love how people just run around saying "I'm sick of this! I'm going to fix all of our problems by going to a Mac or to Linux!" Write to us 6 months into your "change" and let us know how "great" your experience is.

And before you bash me, I am a sys admin for a top super computer manufacturer in the world who runs all flavors of OS's and although we heavily run various flavors of UNIX, we're still %50 Windows. Why? Because our engineers need UNIX and everyone else needs Windows. Windows works virtually flawlessly and no one here, even though they all wear Linux hats, wants to change our Windows environment.

hahaha :

I agree with the fact that msft is a good company. But, like most companies they are out for the $ most of all. The new os will be great and i have tried the betas and can't wait for the final release. For those bashing Xp...DONT. I have used XP for about 2-3 years now and have loved almost every part of it. I never have any weird bugs or errors that im not responsible for. XP is very sound and useful. Of course i turn off all the fancy features like backup, update services, and remote assistance because they are a waste of space if you are not a business. But, the fact that they let me turn them off is an indication that they know how to make a computer. The fact that i can change my OS to work they way i like it to work is what will make vista good.

mfg :

AJ:

I am not the kind of person to bash. and I welcome your reply.
I do know exactly what i am doing.. been doing it for over ten years mac and pc and if vista wont run like the wind on a celeron r pc with 1G mem then I am sorry but its not for me. as for windows getting slower and slower it simply is even if not by much on some hardware it is.
don't get me wrong I am not a screw you microsoft guy I simply want the most user friendly hassle free OS and its not windows at the moment I am sorry to say and I think deep down inside we all know thats true.

regards
mfg

Jordo :

Hey, if you ask me, i love vista, i dual booted it with XP when i had Pre-RC1 but since all the newer builds it doesnt like me dual booting. Im running RC2 without XP and it has alot more features than XP. Im not saying that Vista is "Rock Solid" because i still have some problems wich may have been fixed in its "Gold" version. I am wanting to upgrade my computer but it still runs vista great. Im using P4 2.8GHz overclocked to 3.10GHz, 512mb, 200GB Drive 128MB GeForce 5200 ect. I have Aero Glass on it reminds me of the latest versions of linux and Mac OS X. my computer does run faster without Aero Glass but looks worse than XP without it. I am soon going to get 2GB Ram and some 256 or 512MB video card to run Aero Glass really smooth. I cant wait to get "Gold" and i will probly nver go back to XP or if i did, i will try to dual boot it.

Jordo (-_-)

old man :

I think vista is a solid program. though, the average computer user will be confused with it, .

They are going to have to learn a new system all over again.

Try and find the program that lets you remove software??
I add and remove software a lot and I found it but the average consumer won't find it.
I love to dig deep into thewhole operating system and it looks like Vista is a well built system.
The best thing I like is Media Center , which is great.
There are a lot of security things installed on this program though and you have to be an admin..
to insall anything , or remove anything.
The biggest thing I found to be iritating is the incompatibility with software you install. Lots of stuff won't install because of this.
I will probably buy one copy , but I still like the old "XP" better right now.

engraan :

it is funcking operating system
