Helping people with computers... one answer at a time.

There are freeware utilities that will find the installation CD key used on your system for you if you do not have the CD.

How can I find the XP installation CD key used on my system without having the CD?

There are a couple of freeware utilities that will do that for you. I just tried Keyfinder from Magical Jelly Bean, and it seems to do the trick nicely.

There is usually a multicolored tag on the bottom of your laptop or the back of your PC with the product keycode. Please visit this link for Windows Reinstallation Info.

While I agree that Belarc Advisor is a good program for program inventory, the COA that it gives is no guarantee. I have two XP Pro laptops that I use on a "hotspot", and both laptops shows the same COA. How can that be? On the other hand, I helped a friend to find his COA by using the program. He had 30 days to try it out before activating. It was the correct number and validated fine. But how two different systems produced the same COA baffels me. And neither was correct. Does the IP address have anything to do with it?

Some of my files don't have applications to run them and I've had a trojan on my computer. I also don't have the winnt32.exe file in my I386. Don't know if the trojan is the reason why but I want to reinstall my windows XP Pro w/ SP3 but I don't have an installation CD. I have the product key though. I've used the "sfc /scannow" and it didn't prompt me to anything. I dont know if my version is a validated copy but if it is or isn't how do I get a validated windows XP w/ SP3 CD. Can you help me? Thank you.

try xp key viewer to find and view xp key

I've never tried that tool, so can't comment on it. What I can say is that in addition to the tool mentioned in the article, which I've used and work, Belarc Advisor is a comprehensive tool, also free, that will return many product keys installed on your syste, not just Windows, as well as a lot more information.
