Summary: If the only time you're able to get sound on your PC is when you're on Yahoo chat, a spyware check and volume control check may be in order.

Yep, that's odd. I don't know of anything obvious but I would check for spyware, or for any other applications that are running on your machine that might be attempting to use audio. See if turning any of them off helps. Also, you might check the advanced volume controls to make sure that the speakers aren't simply muted for some reason.
