Helping people with computers... one answer at a time.

A virus scan and checking the cooling fans in a computer are good places to start if your machine shuts itself off frequently.

My computer is turning itself off after about 5 minutes. Why?

Well, there's not really enough information to go on here. I'd certainly start with a virus scan, but another possibility is that the machine overheating - I'd check the cooling fans as well.

i got a similar problem. one of my pc's keeps restarting every 5-10 minutes. the strange thing is, it doesn't restart when you're in dos. I say this because when i install windows98, the installation goes smoothly. but after the installation, when it boots up in windows, it restarts or hangs. I boot it up in dos and after 3 hours, it's stable enough and doesn't reboot.

Tested all parts (memory, Processor, power supply, Hard Drive-no virus) and even flashed a new bios, but it still reboots in windows. Could it be that the integrated video is malfuntioning? the board has integrated vga/sound and i got no way of affirming it coz the board has no AGP slot. Got no PCI vid card and am hesitant to buy one. but if i do, would this fix the problem? Thanks again!

With that error message you should be looking at things like the sasser virus. Start here: http://ask-leo.com/archives/000114.html

For the person who asked the original question, it might be as simple as the power setting.
Right click on the desktop, go to screensaver, then power settings. There should be many different options.

try isolating the issue by borrowing a video card, memory, and proc. run your computer with only the 3 put in your board. put in all three parts that you have borrowed in your board (of course include the KB and mouse.

if the board works, replace one part, let's say your video card. and run your computer. if the computer does not crash or restart. turn it off.

now put in another part, and so on. this would most likely isolate the source of the issue.

I have a similar problem. Occasionally when I turn my computer on it just automatically reboots. And when I'm on the internet it reboots itself occasionally as well. Although when connected to the internet, I have managed to pinpoint when it is going to reboot itself. On the internet icon in the bottom right corner, when about to reboot, it only recieves bytes and doesn't send any. This can be resolved by clicking on the refresh button over and over again until some bytes are recieved. But obviously its annoying because I don't spot it everytime.
Could this problem have anything to do with my PC's slow processor at 400MHZ? Is there a certain speed of processor a computer must have to be able to handle broadband properly.

Well, you've done most of the diagnosis yourself :-). Looks like a memory problem to me. I'd grab memtest86 (http://ask-leo.com/d-memtest ) and see if that reports anything specific for you.

I'd recommend you check all your cooling fans, might be a broken CPU fan so you computer shuts down of overheating.

i have the same problem... only thing i can think of that might have caused this is if you opened your computer and maybe didn't or improperly ground yourself before handling the equipement. the hardware is very sensitive to static and that could be what is causing malfunctions...if this is the case i don't even know how to find out what needs to be replaced

That sounds like a hardware problem ... most likely the power supply but it could be other things as well. I'd take it in to be looked at by a hardware tech.

Ok well, i dont know how much this is going to help.. but some of you that are using WindowsXP, try going to Control Panel => Power Options => And in the "Power Schemes" tab ... about half way down it says, "Turn Off Hard Disks:" make sure it doesnt say 5 minutes or 10 minutes.. it should be set to "Never" This way your hard drive will not shut down after 5 minutes. I dont know if this helps anybody, but i hope so, please let me know if this worked for you.

I then plugged my cord back into the computer gave it 30 seconds and shut off, someone please email me or repost a post here if you know any idea's what this could be.

sounds like you're having overheating issues. check your motherboard bios for temperatures. typically cpus should run around the 60's and lower. your system temperature should be about the 50's. and your video card should be about the 60's or lower.

Well, I'd check what the article mentions: the power supply, but also perhaps run a memory test: http://ask-leo.com/d-memtest . If those both turn up nothing, my next suspect would be your motherboard.

READ HERE FOR SHUTDOWN PROBLEMS! i had a q-tek 550 w power supply which i finally found out was giving me shutdown problems. my pc started turning off for no reason and i couldnt turn it back on till i upluged it from the wall, and even then if i tryed to turn it back on it would come on for less then a second and then go off again. u would have to uplug it, then plug back in again, then wait 10 minutes till pushing the power button, then pc would turn on?? but all seems well so far with buying a new power supply which is a q-tek 500w big fan version power supply, so i would say try changing your power supply if my infomation applys. good luck !! :))

my computer had similar problems:
350Watt power supply
AMD 2000 Athlon XP
Aopen Geforce MX 4000 v64
HDD, DVD-RW and CD-rom plugged in

Computer worked fine whilst playing DIVX movies,
but as soon as i started a 3D game (HMM4 for example) it simply turned off by itself after 10-15 minutes with no BSOD. After an immediate restart it played another 5-10 minutes...

I checked power and temperature:
5V actually gave out 4,8V
CPU temp were 67/68 C

So it seemed to be CPU cooling problem.
I manually under-cloacked the CPU to 1800+
(from 133MHz down to 120 Mhz)
and it seems to work fine after 30 minutes playing. So it might be a "fix" u can use before
replacing the cooler. U also need to make sure that your cooler is well placed over
the CPU die and there is enogh (BUT NOT TOO MUCH - on the die ONLY, not around ;)) thermal compound on it.

My regular computer kept freezing forcing me to reboot. After about 15 minutes of repeating this annoying process, the computer works ok before shutting down and then rebooting by itself and shutting down again (this is more likely to happen if I try to go on line too soon or start running programmes) Eventually after about 40 minutes the bcomputer works brilliantly and goes on forever untill the next day when I switch on the cmputer and go through the same fun and games.
However I have now tried a more powerful replacement processor which did'nt boot up at all and now I've tried a new fan and heat sink resulting in an alarm sound and a sole screen message which tells me that the cpu fan is not working even though it is followed by switching off. Finally Ive put the old fan and heat sink back on and the message is still the same.

I recently build a system. When I turned it on,
it gave the motherboard intro, and started to do its post process, then turn off after 2 or 3 seconds. It did this everytime, I turned it on. Before this happened though, I had realized that I had forgotten to apply thermal grease or gel on the CPU. However, at first, I did not think that was the problem. I checked all cables, and wires to make sure they werer connected properly and connected to the right sockets etc. Nothing worked...I turned on the machine, and it went off in 2 or 3 seconds again. Being stumped, and running out of alternatives, I took out the CPU fan, and felt the CPU...it was extremely hot. I let it cool, and applied a little thermal grease on the CPU and reinstalled the CPU fan. Presto, the computer worked...it did not turn off, and I have been using it ever since. Amazing what a little thermal grease can do!!!

hi, I just got finished upgrading a graphics card on my computer so i could play a certain game. My computer worked fine until i upgraded the graphics card and now, my computer last about 30 seconds after i turn it on, and then a "no input sign" appears on my monitor, and then the monitor goes completely black. The wierd thing is that the computer stays on because i can hear the fans still running, so i have to hold the power button until it turns off. I have been dealing with the problem for a while and i am very curious as of what is going on. Hopefully you can help.

ehh check if your computer is overheating. Especially if you have just bought a new hard drive. oh and clean off dust from the fan that might help too. Or a thermal compund on your processing chip might be needed.

January 16, 2007 10:04 PM

I have had experience with computers restarting by itself at random times. Usually its a recent change in hardware. One example was with a Gateway computer, where I installed 768MB of memory, where the motherboard could only handle 512MB. After removing the excess memory, problem solved. I would check the manufacturer of the motherboard (or computer) to see if there is a BIOS update, or driver updates.

Or there could be a nasty virus. Use some free online virus scanning programs and see whats what.

January 29, 2008 3:06 PM

First thing, unplug your machine. Then, I would suggest taking everything off the motherboard to include any extra video card, sound card, phone modem, etc, also unplug the wires connecting to the A: Drive (floppy), CD/DVD drives, and Harddrives. Then after you have that done take the small (watch size) battery out for 15 seconds or longer. By taking the battery out of the motherboard it resets to default. I would plug the machine back into the wall after plugging the monitor and keyboard and mouse into it. Start it and hold the F2 or whatever the systems screen says for setting or setup. If while you sit on that for 10 minutes it shuts off during that time it means its your motherboard. Sorry for that bad news... If you call the manufacturer of the product you have and ask for the replacement cost or repair do it. If they cant I would ask for a model of replacement and they are and will sell you it cheap. Yeah a same or better model. Unless its new Id just take it back to the store and get your money back. But anyways I hope this helps.

This May Because you need to clean the inside of your pc if you let dust get on the processor in can be supre heated and the anti-Cooking Processor system kicks in, or you may have the balster worm, if so you should go to microsoft and download the files From http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/virusenc/

Reply to: Posted by Dan at June 28, 2004 9:32 PM: For the person who asked the original question, it might be as simple as the power setting. Right click on the desktop, go to Properties, screen saver, then power settings. There should be many different options.

Reply: Thank you, Dan!!! I took your advice and yes, it was a simple solution. I right clicked on Desktop, then clicked on Properties - Screen saver. In Monitor Power at bottom, clicked on Power. Therein lay the problem! All four settings were set to turn my computer off after a designated time. I did not choose these settings. Bought this computer new in 2005 and the "turning itself off thing" had NEVER happened until recently. I'll probably never know what caused the setting changes. A similar thing was happening with my sound. The sound would cease .....then I discovered that the Volume Control was sometimes muting itself or the SW Synth Volume was sliding to the bottom .....or both! Again, have no idea why! I now keep a Volume Control icon in the Taskbar for convenience if it mutes again. The icon must have scared it because the volume hasn't turned itself off in a looooong time. :-) Again, Dan, many thanks for your suggestion! ~Joyce

Check you CPU temperature, if you set your laptop battery bios cpu temperature protect as 70 degree, when the CPU temperature over 70 degree, it will close.

Maybe you need to change your CPU fan.

My computer turns on an dworks fine for about 5 minutes. Then it randomly switches itself off. The fan is working and it isn't a lap top. I've checked the plugs and power supply. 5 minute sisn't enough to run a virus scan or delete any programs please help asap!

@susheel
Read the article. It could be a virus or an overheating problem.

My computer screen goes black and the CPU won't turn it off. I have to unplug it which I know is not good for it. I just replaced the cooling fan a few days ago. Now the screen won't stay on,
