Why is Outlook Express sending multiple copies of my email?

There is something strange going on with my Outlook Express version 6. When
I send an Email with an attachment it's sent something like 40 times! Of
course, while sending that mail I notice on my screen nothing at all about this
curious fact. It seems to me - but I certainly do not know why or how - that
probably my Outlook Express duplicates that mail and delivers it 40 times! I
checked my configuration but I see nothing strange with that. Can you tell me
what is the problem and how to solve this?

I did a little research, and I'm finding a couple of common causes.

The good news here is that either should be easy to fix.

Should I allow Outlook Express to compact messages, and how do I get it to stop asking me if I don't?

About 6 months ago I started getting a message (apparently from Outlook
Express, but even when OE is not running) saying "To free up disc space OE can
compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes. -OK/Cancel". This has
become very invasive and, even after OKing (and losing use of the commuter for
several minutes), can pop up again within seconds/minutes and re-pop up within
seconds of being canceled. Cause and cure? I've deleted a lot of spam and
deleted messages in case these were the trigger.

My honest opinion?

Change email programs.

I'll discuss that option, the bug that you're seeing, and what you might do.
But first, I'm going to spend a couple of minutes explaining why I hold that
opinion.

How do I access Hotmail using Outlook Express?

I am an avid Outlook Express user. I love it. I really like the IMAP
feature of accessing Hotmail from various computers, plus it grabs my
POP accounts quickly and easily. Recently, I got the message below from
Microsoft.

"As a valued customer, we want to provide
advanced notice that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the
DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail
Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you
download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the
familiarity of Outlook Express and much more. This next generation of
free e-mail software will allow you to easily manage multiple e-mail
accounts, including Windows Live Hotmail, plus other e-mail accounts
that support POP3/IMAP. Better yet, Windows Live Mail integrates well
with other Windows Live services, and downloads in minutes. After you
provide your user name and password, you will automatically be linked
to your Hotmail account, providing continued access to your email and
contacts."

I tried their "Live Mail", but it's horribly slow and nowhere as
easy to use as OE. Please help!

This has actually been happening slowly over the past couple of
years. Microsoft is phasing out not only Hotmail access in Outlook
Express, but they're phasing out Outlook Express itself.

In other words, the news is not good for all those folks who want to
keep using Outlook Express to manage their Hotmail.

Let's look at your alternatives.

In Outlook Express, can the "Sent Items" folder be saved to CD in
one step and not message by message?

It depends on what you want to do. Depending on that the answer is
either yes, or not really.

Regardless, I have to honestly say that this is one of those cases
where I wish you weren't using Outlook Express.

I need to reinstall Outlook Express, but I can't find it on the Microsoft
web site. Where do I get it?

Note: this
article is a major revision of a previously posted article. Why? A
reader pointed me at new information that fundamentally changed the answer. The
previous article can be found <a href=

here.

•

Apparently the answer is "you can't".

But you can download its replacement.

Let's look at what happened, and what you should probably do.
