Helping people with computers... one answer at a time.

There are a few things to check out if your computer freezes when you insert a CD or DVD into your DVD ROM.

When I insert a CD or DVD into my DVD ROM the computer freezes. What should I do?

I's suspect the device drivers for the DVD drive, myself.

You didn't mention which version of Windows. Assuming it's XP, I'd do the following:

  • run the system file checker.

  • visit windows update paying particular attention to any device driver updates.

  • consider visiting your computer manufacturer's web site and look for updates.

  • consider visiting the DVD drive manufacturer's web site and looking for updates.

I have the same issue with a Dell D620 laptop but only when I have an external monitor plugged in. I have tried it with both monitors running and with only the external monitor running and it freezes. If I turn off the external monitor and use the internal only it works fine. I have checked all drivers and they are at the latest revs. Any ideas?

The cause could be the power pack overheating and shutting off.
I had this trouble with my cd rom drives and found the computer power pack vents were clogged with dust.
I cleaned the fan and vents with a vacuum cleaner and have had no trouble since.
