Actually, the solution provided above is now outdated, if you update your Yahoo Messenger software regularly. As of version 6.0, Yahoo changed the menu structure DRASTICALLY, renaming or moving some menu items, and even renaming one or two menus themselves. To search from within the Yahoo messenger client program in the current version, you actually go to Contacts -> Search Yahoo! Member Directory .
***HOWEVER***
My own experience with this method has been inconsistent at best, oftentimes seeing the program state a different number of total results, just from one page's worth of results to the next...that is, the initial response will say "Showing 1-20 of 153 entries..." only to click "Next 20>>" and see "Showing 21-40 of 47 entries..."
Instead, the solution I use is a bit more (in internet terms) antiquated...the web! You can access the same user database at http://members.yahoo.com . Or, if you prefer, you can click on "Advanced Search" which takes you to http://members.yahoo.com/interests?.oc=a , to get even more specific than the search within messenger itself.
Unfortunately, even there the results are still less than perfect, however the web-based search suffers from the mentioned 'anomalies' much less frequently than the search that I believe has been provided in their own client since as early as (maybe) version 4.5!
Well, as anyone familiar with almost ANY part of Yahoo knows...nobody's perfect!

I have only a username from an instant message. How can I trace this person to locate identity or email address?

It depends on the service ... sometimes they have facilities to look up information, but it will only show as much information as that use wants to make public. In general it's pretty useless, and there's nothing else.

Hey. 99.99% of the time you've lost track of someone, it is the other person's doing. Let it go. Move on with your life.

Well, this very site, http://ask-leo.com, and the mailbag site, http://mailbag.ask-leo.com are that database. If you use the Google Search box on every page, you'll be searching both.
And since you posted, and posting requires javascript also, I'll assume you managed to turn that on :-).
