Helping people with computers... one answer at a time.

Error code 800701f7 results when there is a problem with the .NET Messenger Service.

Why am I getting error code 800701f7 in MSN Messenger?

I've received a small flood of reports of people having problems signing in to MSN Messenger. When they attempt to connect they're getting an error code 800701f7.

A quick look on the web indicates that 800701f7 indicates a "server too busy" state. And sure enough, when I go to look at .Net Messenger Status Page it, too, reports "Server is too busy". It's not reporting that as the .NET Messenger service status, it's reporting that the server is too busy to even return the status of the .NET Messenger service. (I'm also getting other errors on that site occasionally as well.)

Or more simply: the .NET Messenger Service seems to be having some problems.

There's no way to tell when it'll be back. The only advice I have at this point is to wait a while and try again later.

Yep I frequently receive a similar error message but sometimes i get different ones if i try over and over again. In the past I could sign on in MSN web messenger instead but now that page doesn't load. I don't think that the fault is just in MSN 7.0 Beta though because I cannot log on using windows messenger (equivalent of version 3 or 4 I think - can't remember that far back though) either.

I think that microsoft are making changes in their servers which require the servers to be disconnected and so they have less bandwidth for large periods of time, this means that with all the people trying to sign on and off they are unable to process these and the connections just time out. The changes are probably to allow for new functions of MSN 7.0.

I am having the same problem signing into BETA, but the error code is 80070193. It also says that the server is too busy, but when I check the .Net Messenger Status Page, it says that the server is working just fine. I just want to know how this can be fixed.

save yourself the Microsoft misery, and use the AMSN clone available for windows 32, simply installl and run instead of Microsoft's MSN, and see what it is like to chat without the Microsoft bullshit.
just type AMSN download, into google and follow the links, download the win32 and install it, and ignore the msn on your xp box forever, You can remove MSN's version, evben if your tweek the registry, go old msn, use Linux, it isa so much nicer and less intrusive, ....also if you want less popups and viruses dont get any Microsoft updates for anything and use Mozilla firefox browser, instead of that lousy Internet explorer, To Much and Microsoft is trying to get you to use their search rengines......soryy Microsoft, but not all the world is a newbie, and more and more everyday are getting to know Linux.....

I am also getting error 800701f7;
I've checked that that service was online, so it was
next I've closed MSN and than started again and it works fine

PS: to the others go to the msn download page and instal it again, it detects that there is a previous version and ask if it have to repair, yes again after the instalation most of the time the problem is solved...

Hi, I had the same error message '80070193', and it seems to me that i got it to work again. Go to tools, options, connections and 'test connection', which 'should' tell you what was wrong, although it didnt work for me. You should try that and then go to 'advanced settings' and test every connection, and if any are 'unable to connect', untick the box beside that one, and hopefully you will have one that connects (for me it was the TCP one), and try signing-in again, WAHOO!

7.0 has alot of spyware on it and can buggar up all of ur computer, this is caused by the winks and pictures you recive as it does not check for viruses as u click accept, my advice would be to download 6.2 again, it has a virus scanner and will not let you accept pictures or music if it thinks it is unsafe or harmful to your computer. this may not work for every computer because 7.0 has damaged it to much, if this happens then download ad aware 6 (which you can get by typing it into google) and clean out your computer of spyware, also make sure you have a virus scanner, if not download norton anti virus the same way you download ad aware, and scan it, if it comes up clear then 7.0 has damage ur computer beyond belief, so that means ur gonna have to reboot your computer, which also means you will lose everything you saved on it (games ect), this is all i know so i hope this helps.

johnny
June 30, 2005 7:02 AM

Victoria, please don't post crap. msnmsgr 7 won't "damage" any computer, give me a break. In fact it blocks the transfer of any executable file, something msnmsgr 6 did not.

I received the error... cannot connect... code 80072efd. It turned out MSN 7.0 turned on SOCKS and HTTP Proxy under Tools > Options > Connection > Advanced Settings. Weird. Once I turned them off the connection was restored. Problem solved here.

Note: I am not using SOCKS or a Proxy. Chances are, if you do not know what they are, you are not either.

Benjamin
August 14, 2005 6:36 PM

Hi Rachel, probably your firewall blocked out the MSN Messenger. You might want to check your blocked and allowed program list in your firewall.

Benjamin
August 14, 2005 6:42 PM

hi Cara,

The most likely cause for this problem is that your firewall does not allow MSN Messenger to access the Internet. This happens often if you install a new version of Messenger. Make sure MSN Messenger is allowed access in your firewall rules.

This error might also be occuring because there is a proxy server enabled in MSN Messenger while you do not use one. To remove the proxy settings, click the "Tools" menu and then "Options..." at your MSN Messenger main window. Then in the options screen click "Connection" in the list to the left. Next, click the "Advanced Settings..." button. You can try and uncheck all checkboxes in this screen except the one labeled "TCP" to let MSN Messenger connect through a direct connection. If that does not work you can restore the settings again by checking the boxes you unchecked before.

Benjamin
August 14, 2005 6:50 PM

Sorry Rachel ignore my previous post.. Here I have some solutions for you.

First, check the .NET service status as this error may be caused by problems at the MSN servers.

If there are no reported problems on the MSN servers, see if your proxy settings are correct: click "Tools" and then "options" at your MSN Messenger main window. In the options screen click "Connection" in the list to the left. Next, click the "Advanced Settings..." button. If you (likely) do not use a proxy server, try unchecking all the checkboxes except the one labeled TCP and see if you can connect now. (You might have to fully close and start Messenger again before retrying to connect)
If you are on a large network, the network administrator can probably tell you if you should have proxy settings in Messenger.

Make sure if Internet Explorer supports 128 bits encryption. Open Internet Explorer and click Help, then About Internet Explorer. If the Cipher Strength is less then 128 bits download and install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack. MSN Messenger needs encryption to validate your username and password.

In Internet Explorer: click Tools, then Internet Options, select the "connections" tab. Try unchecking (if checked) "Use a proxy server for LAN" and check "Automatically detect settings.". This should enable both Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger to automatically find the best way to connect to the Internet.

lewis
August 14, 2005 11:42 PM

if you go to your explorer tools menu, then click internet options and on the connections tab, there should be something to do with connection throuch LAN, if you untick all of the boxes then MSN should now work properly. :)

Hi, I'm having problems with the sign in of MSN messenger. It says it's too busy. I have a Netgear Wireless router. I have read the previous comments about changing the "MTU" to 1400. What's this and where do I change it? Please help. Thanks.

I am having the same trouble with the "Too busy" response from MSN Messenger and it has been doing this since I went to wireless connection.
I am on an AOL Connection using a BELKIN ADSL Modem with Wireless G Router - 2.4Ghz-802.11g
If someone can give me some help, I would really appreciate it.

Has anyone figured out where the problem is with this router. I switched over to the Belkin and again on AOL since then MSN and some other sites are not working correctly.

However if i use the same router connected through a different isp it works!! but to make things even more weird if i use a different router on AOL it WORKS!!

it seems that the Belkin and AOL arn't fully compatable. HELP!!

to change your mru or mtu settings to 1400 you need to go to the wan config in your router.
type 192.168.0.1 in a url this should bring up a box asking for user name and password the default will be ADMIN for both from there you will be able to configure your wan settings to 1400 allso to go from a adsl modem to a router with aol you need to setup a new screen name and put the details in your router

till
February 7, 2006 3:59 PM

Double click on the clock in the taskbar and make sure the system clock is set correctly.
Register softpub.dll using the regsvr32.exe tool.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
Restart MSN Messenger.

I have tried going on Start Menu and Run etc and typed in what you have said, however i am still not able to use MSN, and i am getting frustrated. Do i have to change the MTU or MRU aswell as i am also on AOL but am using a Netgear Wireless Router?

February 13, 2006 12:42 AM

if you can get a connection to the internet then your mru and mtu settings are fine.
have you tried going back to a earlier version of msn because what ive been reading is that the latest version is causing problems everywere.
allso its a long shot but a firewall could be blocking msn

if you cant disable your fireall in your router you could try uninstalling msn and then reinstalling it with your firewall enabled. i allso take it that you have a internet connection its just that you cant sighn in to messenger or your hotmail

February 27, 2006 3:32 PM

the best thing to do is unistall msn and reinstall it some internal settings change when you install new hardware or software and msn will not recognise the gateway to sign on. please let me no if this helps

Simon
February 28, 2006 9:34 AM

I have tried this before but with no success. Any other ideas? Maybe it could have something to do with the settings of the router?

February 28, 2006 12:10 PM

you could try doing a registry check and then try to sign in. or check your ports in the router settings http ports should be set to 80 and ftp to 21 allso who is your internet provider

Simon

Leo hi,
We have all had hotmail & MSN at work & all of a sudden get the 800701f7 message. We are on a network system with Broadband. We thought that work stopped it. I am not sure as I have seen this message previously & then it was ok. However, the 192.168.0.1 in the url is a little different to the one currently on our computer I am not sure we can change this number on our computer - what the implications are & secondly - the number is not highlighted for us to change. Please help us

THE SOLUTION TO 800701f7 with MSN MESSENGER

I have analysed this issue over an hours period of time trying to fix this problem 800701f7 on MSN on my mates OS, i suspect if you have correct connectivity with the internet and if u can not use MSN messenger application, key ports malfunction, when u test the connectivity with MSN messenger by click on messenger, tools options, then connectivity, then connection settings-advance settings and then test your http proxy settings with the connectivity with .NET frame work with the MSN network, THIS PROMBLEM I assume would be due to Your .NET Frame work Drivers on your system are not functioning correctly

Roy
April 12, 2007 6:32 AM

REINSTALL Your .NET Framework drivers depending what OS system you are running on your computer, if you have Windows XP Pro or Home i would suggest basic version 1, .net framework 1 at Microsoft.com co-operation! Hope it works out?! lol its worth a try!
